Windows 11, already a monumental shift in design from its predecessor, continues to evolve.
In its upcoming 23H2 release slated for fall, one of the standout features that has caught the eye of many is the 'never combine mode' for the taskbar.
Previously, Windows 10 users will recall the ability to keep icons on the taskbar separate, which can be especially helpful when juggling multiple windows from the same app. The 'never combine' option ensures each window has its representation on the taskbar without grouping them.
Microsoft removed the 'never combine mode' for the taskbar' with Windows 11, but it's finally coming back with version 23H2.
Additionally, enabling this mode has been streamlined for user convenience. The steps are straightforward:
- Access Taskbar Settings: Simply right-click on the taskbar. A menu will pop up.
- Navigate to Taskbar Behaviors: Select “Taskbar settings” from the pop-up menu.
- Adjust Preferences: Under the section labeled “Taskbar behaviors”, find the option that reads “Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels”. From the drop-down menu adjacent to it, select 'never'.
But what if you're a power user with multiple monitors? Microsoft has improved the behaviour and introduced a separate setting dedicated to those who operate in multi-monitor environments. It allows them to choose if they want the 'never combine' feature applied consistently across all taskbars on different screens.
This feature can be particularly useful for those who multitask across various apps ns and prefer an ungrouped view on their taskbars. It offers more direct access to individual windows and can help in enhancing productivity by reducing the number of clicks and the time spent in searching for the desired window among grouped icons.
In conclusion, it is a reflection of listening to feedback and ensuring that users have the tools to customize their experiences.

"Windows 11, already a monumental shift in design from its predecessor, continues to evolve."
Don't you mean; Windows 11, a huge step backwards in user experience, is slowly reversing that trend by re-adding the features it is missing when compared to previous offerings from Microsoft?

It's MacOS'ified. They have had that antihuman design for years. Watching my macos using coworkers struggle to find the window they need to open is always mentally draining, because that's an issue which should never have existed.
Microsoft UX designers bragged that they are suing macs years ago (https://medium.com/microsoft-design/opendesignoutlook-7e0f4e591082) and it seem that this trend is only accelerating.

"Ok back to win98 you go…."
Actually I find Windows 7 to have been the pinnacle of Windows design.

it took them only what.. 2 years to bring it back and announce it as "new feature" ?

Combining was released in Windows 7 almost 15 years ago... Maybe go back to XP or 3.11 if it scares you.

I'm pretty sure that Windows XP would automatically group Explorer windows into the same taskbar icon. They probably called it something different at the time though.
CJatWork - 10 months ago
@GT500, you pretty much nailed it. XP taskbar properties has a checkbox for "Group similar taskbar buttons". If I recall correctly, it was on by default in a new installation but I have mine off.

Millennials do not disappoint. Whenever they are unable to understand something, they have to resort to emotions, being unable to present any reasonable arguments otherwise.
Modern designers are incapable of creating functional UX and as young people have never worked with functional software , they don't even know what they're missing https://twitter.com/tuomassalo/status/978717292023500805

To be very honest I don't like Windows 11 much

It's all about complete control these days folks . Windows will never allow the freedom it once did .
Just like google search will never ever link to news sources that are outside the mainstream media narrative .
Don't believe it , google something political and the ONLY sites it will link to are the below:
Cnn, Msnbc, Abc, Cbs, Nbc, HuffPost, NYT, WashPost, The AP, BuzzFeed, Politico, NewsWeek, The Hill, Rolling Stone, Twitter , Sky News, Mediate, The Atlantic, USA Today, Time magazine, LA Times, Politifact, Reuters, Facebook , BBC, Wikipedia, Boston Globe, Vox, The Miami Herald, Mother Jones, Instagram, Factcheck .or, HLN , Yahoo, MSN, NY Daily News, Vice, Univision, People magazine, PBS, NPR, New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, Daily Beast, Bloomberg, Aurn, National Journal, BI ,
If you want truth follow the below.
It's very very very difficult to find factual information these days since all search engines only link to propaganda sources .
Try searching for political info on Google and other main stream search engines for instance , the ONLY links they will show you are from the above sources . Twitter and Facebook will also ONLY link to the above sources .
99.9% of all factcheckers are liberal owned and funded as well and their sole purpose is to confirm the lies that the above sources report . It fools a lot of people because they truly believe factcheckers are legit factcheckers but nothing could be further from the truth .
By far the best way to know with 100% certainty what's factual info is to seek out what the above listed sources insist is disinformation because what they claim is disinformation and not trustworthy is ALWAYS 100% trustworthy .
What the above sources promote as real news IS NEVER EVER real news .

Advice to herbman...It is best to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

I have Windows 11 with the latest update (9/30/2023), but I don't see the the option "“Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels”. Am I missing something?
CJatWork - 9 months ago
That doesn't come with just any/latest updates. You need the Feature Update, 23H2, which has only been released to the preview channel last week. That's why you're not seeing it yet.

Thank you!

I was at the point of a burnout, my productivity was declined significantly and I work for a multi billion company, I wanted to say please please please get the settings of the taskbar use back, as before in Windows 10. By now a 30+ years I have been using a windows computer. Now I am absolutely convinced they did this change on purpose, to stop humans working and get computers in our places, getting the settings back for "taskbar enlarging" "small icons without naming" and "never combine taskbar" is so easy. If it is over for us humans to do the jobs we do and they really want humans stop doing their work than they will probably continue with the ignorant changes. Hi people if they do not change it back. this is an agreed change on purpose by the big firms, they will replace all of us by automation. Good day, I will not stress anymore about work. I do not care, if my boss wants me to be more productive he will sort it out with these big firms, it's not my challenge to take.

This is just plain ignorance. This is what they get for hiring a bunch of foreigners and outsourcing everything under the Sun. Microsoft is so out of touch with reality, it's disgusting. Yeah, everything like Apple and Google! But wait a simple Simon taskbar that took two years to reincorporated back into Windows 11 that is completely wrong and just plain stupid! Yeah I'll take Windows 95, Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows XP or Windows 7 instead of this stupid bloatware with all this Universal app bs, it's not a phone, it's where real people want to get real work done and obviously Microsoft doesn't understand that! I wish IBM OS/2 was back and Windows never ever existed. I'll take DOS any day! What a bunch of rubbish!
This long anticipated bringing back "UNGROUPING" of task bar icons is obviously a hack and doesn't even work right, I mean come on, that's what really bugs me, all this garbage in Windows and all these vulnerabilities every month hundreds of patches, fixes, updates, and more bugs, they can't even get this little stuff right.
The labels for the icons are cut off in half or don't even show at all! Come on! Simple simon says what kind of teenie boober newbee is programming this rubbish? Then if that wasn't bad enough, this overflow is rubbish! You overflow the taskbar, it stops "ungrouping" items again! GIGO! What a hot mess! So much for productivity and all these bells and whistles distractions! Before you could scroll the items in the taskbar if it got to big or resize and reposition the taskbar. What are these people thinking!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!
