Ubuntu 24.04 is making it more difficult to install deb files just to push Snaps. You still install them with something like Gdebi but you cant right click in the file manager and chose to open with Gdebi you to launch Gdebi and chose the file you want to install. This is wrong and Canonical knows better and should be ashamed of themselves. There just going push their users to other Ubuntu distros such as Linux Mint or Pop OS heck some might try Arch based distros. :nono: Nothing wrong with those distros its just the fact their making thing way more difficult for there users.

Well, it's not like you didn't know this was coming, is it? You yourself have mentioned it many times over the last couple of years, and it must be at least that long ago that Canonical announced its intentions. They can't be accused of not giving everybody fair warning....

Yeah, it sucks. But the tech world is a fast-moving one.....and innovation is constant, AND continuous. Many new ideas flop.....but some stick around, at least for a time. There again, Mark Shuttleworth has a history of backing the wrong horse. And that's a FACT.

Give it another couple of years. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we don't see Snaps consigned to the toilet-bowl of oblivion. I'm expecting it, if the truth be known..!

Yeah while evaluating Ubuntu the omission of gebi was a kicker, especially for those wishing to install chrome without using the command line.

the side distros dont have this issue

That's not the point, as ubuntu is often touted as one of the easiest distros for Windows users to try.

using command line to install gdebi is counterintuitive to that goal

You can use synaptic or the software center to get it too.

Yeah MadmanRB gets it and since so many people are moving away from Windows 11 some of them might possibly move to Linux.

And they'll want something that's easy to use out of the box and have to fuss to much with the terminal. I see those people trying Linux Mint or Pop OS if they see that using the official Ubuntu flavors aren't as beginner friendly as it use to be.

As far back as I remember you always had to install gdebi in Ubuntu and Ubuntu flavors.

Snaps have improved over the last few releases and besides if you don't like Snaps than don't use a Snap based Linux distro.

I've used Ubuntu and use Lubuntu 24.04 LTS and have no complaints with the OOTB installed oem default Snaps.

Containers have been around for awhile they're in Puppy Linux and called SFS files which have everything you need inside a container.

App Images and Flatpak are containers also.

Snap ain't going away containers are the future.

Containers are easier for the developer and that's who it's about nowadays.

Eh the thing is that container formats have issues, such as basic things like using controllers in steam without needing to jump through hoops to do it.

The .deb version can do it, but the flatpak version can't.

This is why I don't use "immutable" distros as they are too locked down and restricted, making it near impossible to install certain things like nvidia drivers or gamepad support.

Fair enough.

I don't game on Linux on a count of Linux doesn't have the graphics card driver support for my graphics cards to run Flight Simulators I run and Windows does.

I still run Windows XP and Windows Vista for my flight Simulators offline of course as I don't need no internet connection to create weather.

Another issue is theming and other custom settings that you encounter with containers.

The theming bit is better than it used to be, especially on flatpak.
