File search engines, like catfish used to work lightning fast, but lately have been very slow.

I tried other file search progras like Corehunt, but they were unable to find files that catfish could find in miliseconds.

I read about FSearch on line at tried to install.  This is what I got on the terminal.

I then thought updating apt-get would help but that failed, too.

Any assistance in deciphering this would be appreciated.

Try apt install fsearch-stable

thanks for the suggestion.

when I tried before apt-get was not working

this time it still fails but for a different reason.

since I posted last I used timeshift to revert to LM 20.3

and now I am using catfish again. Used to be fast

I ran some tests in grub

the summary says I have bad physical volumes. I guess that means my harddrive

so this might be the reason for the slow searches

You can try using mlocate for faster searching

sudo updatedb

locate leafpad

This is an update on this thread.

I reverted back to LM 20.3 and apparently it has fsearch in its repository, while version 21.1 Virginia, did not

So I just installed Fsearch from the repository. Unfortunately it does not seem to work, and catfish is now working ok in LM version 20.3.

I don't quite understand why Fsearch makes us populate it and configure its files before it can search. If anyone can simplify that I would be be grateful.

thanks for this comment.

I guess you mean using the terminal as a file search?

I usually need to locate individual files and folders by their names.

But to each their own. I  used mlocate and sudo rm to remove left over files left with Freetube install using a Ubuntu .deb.

Removed it not because it was not working. Just did not fit my needs.

Synaptic did even see the install. Good thing I know a little about sudo dpkg -r command.

From the command man dpkg in terminal

dpkg(1) dpkg suite dpkg(1)

NAME
dpkg - package manager for Debian

SYNOPSIS
       dpkg [option...] action

WARNING
This manual is intended for users wishing to understand dpkg's command
line options and package states in more detail than that provided by
       dpkg --help.

It should not be used by package maintainers wishing to understand how
dpkg will install their packages. The descriptions of what dpkg does
when installing and removing packages are particularly inadequate.

DESCRIPTION
dpkg is a medium-level tool to install, build, remove and manage Debian
packages. The primary and more user-friendly front-end for dpkg as a
CLI (command-line interface) is apt(8) and as a TUI (terminal user
interface) is aptitude(8). dpkg itself is controlled entirely via
command line parameters, which consist of exactly one action and zero
or more options. The action-parameter tells dpkg what to do and options
control the behavior of the action in some way.

dpkg can also be used as a front-end to dpkg-deb(1) and dpkg-query(1).
Manual page dpkg(1) line 1 (press h for help or q to quit)

I understand a lot of folks prefer gui point and click.

I teach myself as I grow older to use the terminal.

So it looks like you drive a Vespa or another type of scooter. I use my Mexican, leather shoes.

I will just deal with this part of this post for now, having just tried it.

It looks like you are just looking for a program, eg leafpad.

I look for individual files by name. If if typed in txt or textfile I would get thousands of files. So just getting the program name would not work for me.

am I getting this wrong?

thanks for showing me this method. It has a learning curve, and I apply my energies to different topics. It's not intutive, so I don't know if I can find a file by name with it yet.

I have opened the search GUI (I love those clunky old graphics) but I have not figured out where to input a search term and send the engine to it.

so far in LM 20.3 catfish is doing ok. I have a huge amount of files but use very limited tech to use them, txt, pdf, jpeg, sometimes other extensions. but this is not an issue of extensions, rather of names

 Weather in Pecos: 76 °F
 ....

....

this first one you list must require weather-util installed, right? Or is this a different program?

or perhaps  this is some sort of template you have installed revealing you are in Pecos, etc

I want to avoid any locational identification if possible.

If you have problems with giving up location.

Then don't concern yourself with my weather script.

I installed ansiweathder and then inserted my town location in the script.

Some times I take a crooked road to get my head straight.
