Why does mxlinux fall behind Debian kernel version? Debian kernel version is 6.1 as Dec-2023 yet users keep asking how to update to the latest kernel for mxlinux.

Since mxlinux is based on Debian what would prevent any app or program from running on the latest kernel on mxlinux?

Why does mxlinux fall behind Debian . . .

MX Linux is a Community based flavour of Linux.  It is done in co-operation with another branch of Debian called antiX.

When an upgrade to Debian is released, the developers at MX Linux have to merge their system with that new version.

They have to check to see that all the packages, modifications, and tweaks will work properly with the new kernel.

Because they are volunteers, every thing must be done on their own time.  They don't get paid, and they still have to buy their own computers, internet access, &c.

If they do find a compatibility issue, it will be even longer, before they can release a new stable version.

If you are using MX Linux, and want to help, why not join the group and offer to volunteer?

https://mxlinux.org/about-us/

Cheers!

Naught

No offense to you,Naught, but I suspect they won't embrace the offer.

Unless I misunderstood, Compis was banned there.

I have read of some complaints of their recent distros, but I don't have the knowledge or ability to comment beyond that.

I use what works for me.

I am grateful for the efforts taken to put together the distro I'm using.

You can install latest kernel from here

https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/ahs/l/linux/

You'll need the image, headers, and firmware then you'll be on the latest.

More information on how to update

https://mxlinux.org/current-release-features/ the kernel

Also they use debian stable not testing or unstable

Whether they volunteer has nothing to do with the topic. The fact that they support antix as well as mxlinux and mxlinx AHS, advance mxlinux.

As was pointed out by cryptodan you can manually install the latest kernel. So why would they purposely have the preinstalled version behind Debian's current version ?

The latest kernel will not break any features espicially since mxlinux only supply apps ontop of the Debian. Can you suggest anything from mx that would not work on the latest version ?

The iso you download is the iso created at the time the default kernel was included in debian.

You can still install any kernel you wish or even compile your own from https://www.kernel.org

Mxlinux like Mint is geared towards those wanting to jump ship from Windows. Kernel upgrades can and will cause issues especially with regression breaking wireless networks.

The version I was using is the Mx21.3 not the latest.

OK. It looks like the latest version matches the Debian version unlike the previous version.

The very first thing you should always do after setting up a system? Have a valid backup image of your drives.

Acronis True Image (not free but very good)

Your comments mean nothing. i will state it as it is and if anyone dislikes they can offer a valid comment.

Unlike you stating you spent more time researching my posts than the question. Perhaps you can research if my statement about mx linux 21.3 being behind Debian in Kernel version is true ? for the version I was describing 21.3. and why would an older version exist if they operating system is based on Debian, meaning they do not make operating system changes but add apps to assist in the user of Debian.

You don't understand the repo system and the meaning of upstream providers no longer supporting software.

Oh, this is getting boring. Compis, why don't you just do us all a favour and go somewhere else to ask your daft questions? All you're doing is to waste bandwidth here.

I'm getting fed up doing this. Topic locked.
