Hi:

Linux newbie here.

I want to get Kali onto an 8GB USB flash drive, with persistent storage. I used Rufus to put 2022.2 Live onto my flash drive, and it works pretty much fine. But then I wanted to configure persistent storage. However, 2022.2 Live appears to take up most of the space on my flash drive, leaving only a max of about 500 MB of space left for a persistent storage partition.

How much space do I need for various activities in Kali? If I wanted to have more than 500MB of persistent storage space, would I have to reinstall with another version of the distrib? I though Live was the main one they recommend to use with persistence, no?

Thanks for any help.

You'd need about 16gigs for persistent storage.

Huh? Do you have a citation for that? They're talking about 4GB or less

in the documentation. Keep in mind, my Linux skills are like a child's.

Mostly I want to learn some WiFi hacking.

If you apply updates and other tools that 8gigs can shrink rather fast.

So boot up your current install then run

df -h

Will do. Give me an hour or two, I'm working on something

else right now.

That's a good point about the updates.

8gig is the minimum if you don't run updates and just use the live session to scan and run the tools to collect data and store it.

But for that I'd recommend using an ssh server and use sftp/scp to upload to it.

Is your estimate based on my doing all kinds of work

and needing all kinds of updates?

I ask because I mostly only want to learn WiFi and

LTE hacks, not everything that's covered in Kali.

Yes I am, the additional install of additional software can greatly decrease your overall all drive space. Hence why I asked for

D'oh! Wait...doesn't that suggest there's 3.9GB free?

I'm too tired to look tonight, because it's a slow boot, and I have no storage

or access to data on the Kali system, but I'll check tomorrow.

BTW, does setting everything up with UEFI boot boot any faster that

it does with legacy BIOS boot?

Nope speed is determined by media used.

So, then what advantages are there really to booting

via UEFI as opposed to legacy BIOS?

Uefi provides installation with 128 primary partitions on gpt.

Legacy as 4 primary or 3 primary with 1 logical / extended.

Oh, thank G-d. I have no idea how I would've coped with just

127 partitions.

Interesting. I'll run Gparted and post back with my results

tomorrow. Thanks again, Dan.
