Share Something You Learned Today

This thread is for sharing something (Linux/Unix related) that you learned today. Pretty open-ended. For example, today I learned that Cat can show line-numbers. Which is pretty cool.

Command:

cat -n /directory/file

example1@example:~$ cat -n ~/file
     1    This is a test file. This is the first line.

Don't Export Files from Shutter to Desktop, it messes up Desktop Icons.  At lease for me it did.

I learned how to properly reconfigure my bios and get my Linux Mint Mate to boot from my usb thumb drive.

After a significant number of 'program' installs and uninstalls and general 'doing stuff I was unsure of the outcome'.....

I decided it was probably a reasonable idea to clean out the detritus.....

Neat method of 'backing up' profiles ETC in Firefox and Thunderbird

If you only need to back up Firefox, an excellent, perhaps superior, alternative is the free FEBE Firefox extension.  Initially designed for backing up extensions, it now offers the options of backing up various sections of your profile such as bookmarks, cookies, auto-complete, etc. Most importantly, it allows you to back up your entire profile just by checking a single box. Edit to Add : I timed my backup fro a certain time (today), and also specified what I wanted backed up...All Good !....did the job on time and the folder I specified the backup to go to now has those details in it )

I am also experimenting with THIS PAGE 

In a previous post I told about firefox 'hesitating' as it loaded.

It would hesitate long enough for me to be able to see a 'part page' in the middle of the screen, and be able to read the name of the page being loaded in the bottom left hand corner of that part page, before it 'snapped' out to the edges of my screen....

On the page linked to above, I have ONLY done the following:

• First open Firefox.

• Type "about:config" (without quotes) in the Firefox address bar and then click "Enter". This command opens a configuration page that allows the user to change advanced system settings in Firefox.

• Speed up page loading/rendering time in Firefox. Right-click anywhere in the "about:config" window, click on "New" and then select "String". Name the string "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" (without quotes). Enter a value of "0" and then click "OK". This tweak decreases the amount of time Firefox waits to render a page from 250 milliseconds to zero. Make the same process and name the string "content.notify.interval" and enter a value of "0".

• Normally Firefox only sends one or two tunnels to the website. However, the more tunnels you use the faster you go. To change this, type in filter bar "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" and change the value to "150".
  Attention: The more tunnels you use, the more bandwidth you use, meaning you could use as tunnels as you want but that would probably kill the sites bandwidth if everyone did that. 150 is a very good value.

• Type "network.http.pipelining" in filter bar, and set it to "True" by double clicking it.

• Type "network.http.proxy.pipelining" in filter bar, and set it to "True" by double clicking it.

I have kept a typed record of what I have done here.....Just in case.

Also, is the above post still a work in progress and has not solved your problem?  If so, I see you have a Nvidia Card, perhaps there is an issue with the appropriate drivers.  Hope you got it working!

and yes...(post #7) this has definitely become a work in progress. The "hesitation" continues unabated.  If I already have pages open, and I double click the google link on my second monitor it will open the extra page alongside the other open pages with no hesitation.

If however there are no other web pages open......then there is a distinct hesitation.

probably not the biggest deal in the world...it just bugs the heck out of me !

Today I learned that all the stuff I tried out in post #7 is a load of hogwash.

Made no difference whatsoever to the loading time of firefox.

So i have altered the various settings etc back to their original state.

@pcpunk.....the work in progress has fallen in a heap....

I also tried altering the video card driver via menu>> administration>> driver manager....no difference either

My "hesitation' still continues.

Today.....I found THIS

I notice that it recommends 'bleachbit'.....I have read elsewhere that this is a no-no....quite dangerous etc....a bit like registry cleaners in windows os's....

A better alternative is Ubuntu Tweak. As I often change kernels I use Ubuntu tweak to remove the old ones had no issues in the last 12 months.

 

Ubuntu Tweak's “Janitor” is another very useful maintenance tool. Displaying the storage gains and the package names directly provides enough insight to allow the user to act with enough confidence and safety. Just tick the boxes that correspond to the removal of an item and then press the “clean” button located on the lower right. You won't find Ubuntu Tweak on your distribution's default repositories, so you'll have to download the .deb package from the website.

And before you ask.

Because I am too lazy to do it in terminal.

I learned that if one has the Pulse Audio EQ installed in MInt, one should not try to launch it while a youtube video is already in progress...pretty sure it made Firefox freeze-up
