If you want help you are going to have to post more info. That is a very generic error. Tell us more about the problem, what are you trying to update, install, etc. What commands are you using, post the output of the terminal (if you are running it via that).

Are these for known good packages? What repositories do you use?

for example when i type apt-get install tori it tells me that "

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package tor is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'tor' has no installation candidate
"

and the same for other programmes for example gimp and other.

i don't know which repositories is it :/

Those aren't errors. We just asked you to update your repository list. Did it fix the problem?

Are you using version 1 or 2 of Kali Linux?

If you are using Kali Linux 1.0 you have to change repositories.

in your terminal type: cat /etc/debian_version

from the command line after running "apt-get update"

try: "apt-cache search tor" <- this will return a lot of results, i guessed you might mean "tor browser")

you can search any package name and then "apt-get install <package name>"

As I said before I strongly recommend you get used to an easier distro like Ubuntu before you move to Kali. Kali is not very user friendly and is designed for penetration testing (testing if your website is vulnerable). Is there a reason you are using kali?

i couldn't upload pic. so i copy it.

root@kali:/etc# cat /etc/debian_version
Kali Linux Rolling
root@kali:/etc# apt-cache search "tor browser"
root@kali:/etc# apt-get install tor
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package tor is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

E: Package 'tor' has no installation candidate

so there is no reason why i use kali. i just want to learn this system

I have to agree here. you should look at a more user friendly distro for learning.

PCLinuxOS, Mint, Peppermint, Puppy for example.

For online security and privacy you should look at TAILS Linux, tor is already

installed and configured. (more user friendly than Kali Linux for new Linux users)

https://tails.boum.org/

E: Package 'tor' has no installation candidate

Tor browser is not included in Kali Linux rolling (2.0)

If you "must" use Kali Linux and "must" have Tor, do this in terminal: (as root or sudo)

echo -e "deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib\ndeb http://security.kali.org/kali-security/ sana/updates main contrib non-free" > /etc/apt/sources.list

and then

apt-get update

apt-get update --fix-missing

apt-get install tor

Hi gio-sky and :welcome: to BC and to the Linux & Unix Section. We hope you enjoy your time with us.

There is a short article here, which relevantly states in part:

NOTE: If you’re running the bundle as root, it will run into problems ( Most probably, it won’t simply open ).  In that case, I’d suggest you to create a new normal user and run the bundle as that user, which should make the tor browser bundle to open up without any issue. If you need help in creating a normal user with sudo privileges, please read THIS article. If you need any help with this, leave a comment and I’ll help you with the best of my knowledge simple-smile.png?w=940&ssl=1

I note that your original attempts were as root, you might try to do it simply as regular user, and preface apt-get &c commands with "sudo".

Also, if you wish to try another pen(etration) testing option or two, then read my post here, about Fedora Security Suite.

i couldn't upload pic. so i copy it.

... will not work in this Section. Read my template for newcomers, following, about image posting:

Newbies on screenshots -

If you need to know how to post a screenshot in the Linux Section, you can read, at Linux How-To and Tutorial Section, NickAu's Topic “How to post a screenshot Linux style”. Or click

… #2 refers.

More recently, in helping another Member, they used http://postimage.org (formerly postimg.org), I joined it, and they are also BC friendly

Hope this is of some assistance
