I hope this is a simple question, but what's best, install a program or use portable if available?

For security, convenience and updates (if any) use a full install.

If you go out to client locations, or some-such use a portable.

If it's a good company the creates a quality product it shouldn't make any difference.

FWIW & to minimize duplicated effort, there's an identical, active discussion here:

Portable is nice if really honestly is portable.  Thunderbird portable, at version 102.15.1, works mostly well.  Calendar Tasks does not work but Events does work.  Portable is supposed to mean, like no involvement with Windows Registry.

Another consideration:

An installed version can optimise itself during the install to work best with the machines particular hardware.
eg. a photo or video app can optimise itself for your machines particular graphics card/device.

A portable vesrion has to work with/on any hardware it is connected to, so can't be optimised in the same way.
