Must have, go to FREE software for troubleshooting computer issues today?

Years ago I was messing with computers on a regular basis and had a group of programs I kept on hand for myself and computers I'd work on. I stopped doing that quite a while back now...  and, I keep my own computer up to date, don't visit bad sites, don't click dumb links, etc... and I use NoScript on firefox... etc... I'm careful. And then my kids have laptops that they only use for school so I don't let them connect to the internet.
Anyway... I don't have any issues for myself...
I have one child that does get online, but rarely uses it for anything. Her computer, I don't remember a time when it wasn't slow. I could go check the mail and come back(mailbox is about 1000 feet from the house) and it will still be starting up, or opening a program. Ugh...
I may post another topic about that at some point.
My son's laptop, that I'm on right now, seems to be having some trouble with windows updates. I'm going to keep working on that. But, I figured I'd check into some things and clean up junk files and such in a way that I haven't done in a long time.
Back then, my go to programs included CCleaner and malwarebytes. Before that, adaware was on my list as well as spybot(loved the license agreement compared to today's stuff)
I know some of those programs have fallen in and out of favor over the years and I'm not quite out of the loop.
I used to use the download section of Cnet to judge reviews on free software. Now I don't know which sites still do that and which ones are trustworthy.
Is Ccleaner still a good program? Malwarebytes?
Basically, I want to safely clean up junk files where I can also view them like I could with CCleaner... and having that I can run alone to check for virusts outside of windows defender, well that might be a good idea.
Thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

You could add to use a Limited User Account instead of an Administrative User Account for daily driving. This alone eliminates most of the malware, unwanted changes and unwanted installs.
