Time was, back in the days of audio cassettes, that if I suddenly heard a radio programme on the airways I could switch on recording mode in a cassette player  and capture the soundtrack with scarcely any delay or "loss", and replay it later (the cassette player was hooked up to the hi-fi).  The audio quality might not have been up to latest standards but for the most part this was not a problem.

Question: Is there some modern day software that could achieve the same end = have it on standby ready to fire up and record at the touch of a button?

Looks ideal thanks - except that it doesn't look like it will work for W 7. There must be an equivalent for W 7 for until I get around to upgrading.

I have found that there is an app already built in to W 7 called "Sound Recorder". I have activated this - but don't seem to be able to get any volume despite fiddling about with the controls.
