I'm just using Google Fu here, but this might work, assuming creation date =  Date taken.

https://www.reddit.com/r/excel/comments/164uz9x/how_to_quickly_import_file_creation_dates_into/

I am not sure, but I'd guess one of the major photo organizing programs, such as Adobe Lightroom would have a feature that would allow you to scan a folder or folders and create some sort of index of all the photos. Once you have that index, there's probably a file format you could export it to.

Wait, the title of this thread lists Word, but in the body of the message, you make it sound like you want these data imported into Excel. Can you please clarify?

Well, do you just need the numbers, or do they have to be in Excel?

I say that because Explorer will let you display column headings, including tags, such as date photo was taken. If you turn that on in each folder, and sort by the column header, you'd know the numbers.

Excel would probably count them.  8000 images to go thru

Okay, I'm not clear on what you want. If all you want is to count them, what's wrong with the method I described above? Why does it have to be done in Excel, rather than Explorer?

Needing a printed list and needing it from Excel are two different things. I suggest you try the above suggestion and see how it works for you. It would only take a minute or less for each folder with the "dir" command from within a command prompt. You could also use the "/s" switch to see a list of everything, including subfolders (subdirectories).

https://www.computerhope.com/dirhlp.htm#:~:text=The%20dir%20command%20displays%20a,in%20the%20DIRCMD%20environment%20variable.

If you want the ease of doing this in Explorer, there are programs that allow you to print a list of files/directories from there too.
