I was using duckduckgo , but it has 1 started crashing and 2 will no longer play videos even on youtube the audio plays but the screen goes black, except the ads they still play.

I have tried firefox and edge but they don't seem to want to install.

Is this a case of google trying to force the use of chrome?  I seem to have read where youtube is throttled on firefox. or is it something else?

I had firefox installed a few months back and it did the crashing thing like duck is doing, they don't seem to like a laptop.

  1. Safe Mode / Clean Boot:

    • Windows: Boot your laptop in Safe Mode (or perform a Clean Boot) to determine if background applications are causing conflicts.
    • Mac: If you're using a Mac, boot into Safe Mode to check if the issue persists.
  2. System File Checker (Windows):

    • Run the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type sfc /scannow.
  3. Check for Hardware Issues:

    • Sometimes, hardware problems, particularly with the graphics card or memory, can cause such issues. Run a hardware diagnostic tool to check the health of your hardware components.
  4. Create a New User Profile:

    • Sometimes, user profile corruption can cause issues with applications. Create a new user profile/account on your computer and try accessing the browsers from there.
  5. Network Settings Reset:

    • Resetting your network settings might help if the issue is network-related. This can be done through the network settings in your operating system.
  6. Update BIOS/UEFI:

    • Outdated BIOS/UEFI can sometimes cause compatibility issues. Check your laptop manufacturer's website for updates.
  7. Disable Antivirus/Firewall Temporarily:

    • Sometimes, antivirus or firewall settings can interfere with browser functionality. Try disabling them temporarily to see if that resolves the issue.
  8. Check for Overheating:

    • Overheating can cause applications to crash. Ensure your laptop's cooling system is working properly.
  9. Use System Restore (Windows):

    • If you had a system restore point created before these issues started, you could revert your system to that state.
  10. Check for Malware:

    • Run a deep scan with a different antivirus tool to ensure no malware is affecting your system's performance.
  11. Reinstall Operating System:

    • As a last resort, consider reinstalling your operating system. This can resolve issues caused by deep-seated system corruption.

Remember, these steps can be complex and may carry some risk (like BIOS updates or system reinstalls), so proceed with caution and ensure you have backups of your important data. If you're not comfortable performing these steps, it might be best to consult with a professional technician.

@ Maanmallik1

Perhaps you didn't notice that the title of this topic clearly states the OP has a Chromebook, admittedly of unspecified make and model. Your splendidly copied and pasted reply refers to Windows and Apple computers and therefore is irrelevant to the OP.

I suggest you read topics and their titles more carefully in future before banging off non-relevant posts.

I would backup any data on the drive and then do a hard reset. After the reset do a ChromeOS update. The hard reset takes it back to the day you bought it.
