Bb Code Help

First I would love to welcome one and all of our new members to Bleeping Computer! Just in case I've forgotten some of you. Since it is becoming so hard to give a personal welcome to all of you. As there are sooo many of you.

But anyway back to the subject at hand. I thought that I would post this to help out those of you who seem to be having some trouble w/ your font, size, & color choices etc. Here is a simple screenshot pointing out how you can get to the BB Code Help.
Before you know it you will be able to do it from memory.

Once you get the hang of the BB Color Code. You may want to expand your color horizon of the BB Code. This link will take you to a complete HTML True Color Chart.

Tip: When applying the basic BB Color Code, available when posting on Bleeping Computer. It will look like this.

[COLOR=green]Hello[/COLOR]

Hello

When using the many choices within the Complete HTML Color Chart. It will look like this.

Instead of applying the name of the color as part of the code. Insert the numeric color code.

[color=#336633]Hello[/color]

Hello


When choosing a specific font, It will look like this.

[font=comic sans ms]Hello[/font]

hello




When you want to choose a specific size for your text. This is the BB Code to use.

[size=3]Hello[/size]

Hello


Now for creating bold text. Use this code when doing so.

[b]Hello[/b]

Hello


For italic text. Use this code.

[i]Hello[/i]

Hello


And last but not least. The code to underline text.

[u]Hello[/u]

Hello

Now let's use all the BB Code together.

[color=green][font=comic sans ms][size=4][b][i][u]This is how it will look prior to posting.[/u][/i][/b][/size][/font][/color]

This would be the outcome of applying all of the above code.

Note: When someone states that "tags" are not closed. They are speaking of using the full and correct BB Code.



One other thing I'd like to mention is how to post a hyperlink/URL.

Hyperlink code:

[url=http://www.bleepingcomputer.com]Bleeping Computer.com[/url]

Bleeping Computer.com

You can use the BB Code in this also.

A quick and easy way to apply BB Code in your posts.

Type text and then use your cursor to highlight text, you would like to enhance using BB Code.
Next click on one of the BB Code icons on text editor tool bar. This will automatically add the BB Code tags to your text.

BB Code tool bar options

Font - Text font choices
Size - Text size choices
B - Bold text - B
I - Italic text - I
U with line underneath - Underlined text - U
S with line through it - marked out text - S
A - Font color - A
Globe - Link - link
Tree image - Image - Image
Text balloon image - Quoted text -

Quote

Numeric symbol image - Coded text -

A post preview will show the results.
This can be done with any or all of the BB Code options available on the text editor tool bar.

As a further note, bbcodes are simply codes that you can put in your message that allows you to change the formatting of the text. You can do underlines, change font sizes, change colors, and other fun things.

Almost all codes require you to do a starting code, that starts the effect, and then to end the formatting by doing a corresponding end code.

Here is an example of bolding some text:

[b]This text will be bold[/b]

Notice how we have a beginning code to start the formatting and a corresponding end code to end it.

When we add that text to a message it would look like this:

This text will be bold

There is no reason you can not use multiple codes in one shot. Just remember they must all have ending tags. For example to underline a red font with bold we would type this:

[u][color=red][b]This is an underlined bolded red font [/b][/color][/u]

Which would look like this:

This is an underlined bolded red font

Hope this clears up some confusion.

What is the code for background color? This is really useful for posting spoilers.

That is a tricky question, because most people do not know that in each message the background color can differ slightly.

Now if only there was a transparent color that you could put the text on...

Sort of a rehash of whats been posted:

Using BB code:
use [ ] instead of ( )

Opening tag (B)
Closing tag (/B)
(You must use "closing tags" on everything: (/B), (/I), (/FONT), etc...)


Using (B)Hello(/B) will give you:
Hello

Using (I)Hello(/I) will give you:
Hello

Using (U)Hello(/U) will give you:
Hello

Using Font / Times will give you:
(FONT=Times)Hello(/FONT), which will post as:

Hello


Clicking Size / Large will show as:
(SIZE=7)Hello(/SIZE), and will post as:

Hello

I think this board can accept as high as size 7, and as low as size 4.
Size=7

Hello

Size=5
Hello

Size=4
Hello


Using Color / Green will give you:
(COLOR=green)Hello(/COLOR), which will post as:

Hello

Note:
When it comes to color, you're not limited to the basics; red, blue, green, etc...
HTML codes for colors, will work. Just replace "green" with the color of your choice. You can copy/paste the color name (YellowGreen), or the color code (#9ACD32), in place of "green".
This:
(COLOR=YellowGreen)Hello(/COLOR)
Or this:
(COLOR=#9ACD32)Hello(/COLOR)
(Don't forget the "#" sign, in front of the color code number.)

Would give you this:
Hello

Using (URL=http://www.bleepingcomputer.com)BleepingComputer(/URL) will give you:

You can also combine your codes. For example:

Great Info-- Re instructs re tags!!! Can you not use the" close all tags" instead of closing each tag seperately?

Yes. But I seem do it manually more so than the other. It is such a habit now. Which works well in "Fast Reply"

I simply enjoy typing with bbcodes.
Font face changes come natural to me now.
I just type bracket b bracket your name bracket forward-slash b bracket
as a matter of habit.
Now.

I couldn't say that six months ago.

HAVE FUN WITH US HERE

bracket c-o-l-o-r = red bracket bracket forward-slash c-o-l-o-r bracket cursor placed in between the back to back brackets and HAVE FUN WITH US go back to the start and add
bracket c-o-l-o-r = g-r-a-y bracket cursor I-bar to the end of the line & yup, bracket forward-slash c-o-l-o-r bracket

well, sometimes I use the wrong-way facing brackets.

So, I use the Preview button to check my post first, then I Add Reply.

A little slower at first, but still... practice improves it.
