Here is a little insite on folding at home.

How To Join..

What is Folding?

http://folding.stanford.edu/

Are you ready to Help Mankind and have a little Friendly Competition to keep it interesting?

1st, you need to download the client program.
Windows users should choose the Graphical Client or the ScreenSaver Client(2K or XP only)
Linux users should choose either of the 2 linux clients depending on the distro you're using (see notes on d/l page)

download here: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/f...g/download.html

2nd, install the client, create a username, and put the team#(38444) in the appropriate box

that should be it...
here's the FAQ just in case it's not http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/faq.html

Tips And Tricks For Folding

1. Preparing Your Computer for Folding
a.) Disable Your Screen Saver, System Standby, and Hibernation.
b.) Get rid of spyware!
c.) Destroy all Viruses

2. Optimize Graphical Client Settings
a.) Uncheck "Logos Enabled"
b.) Slide Molecule Draw rate all the way to the left
c.) Select "Folding@Home" for client type.

3. Use flags to control what WUs you get
Locate your shortcut to the folding @ home program or create a new one. Right click it and press "Properties". Unde the "Shortcut" tab, find the "Target:" box. Add -advmethods -forceasm to the end of the target outside of the quotes so that it looks something similar to:
"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods -forceasm
AMD processor users, however should not use "-forceasm" and add "forceSSE" like this:
C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods -forceSSE
The "-forceSSE" flag makes a big differance for AMD's. Watch your temps, though, it does seem to get a little warmer. Make sure the "SSE" part is capitalized.

And Here is A program called Electron Microscope

http://home.comcast.net/~wxdude1/emsite/em3.html

. It will tell you how long it will take to finish the protien, and how points it is worth.
Folding Will stress your cpu a little if you have it on 100% load you can tell it to use as much as 100% of your cpu or as little as 1% 50% Is good if you like to play games and all you can also pause it while you play games. That is the only problem I have ran into when running FAH is it does make your fps much slower if not paused.
The reason I started folding is because Iof my daughter which has a rare genetic disorder called cri_du_chat. We all have our reason's. If you have any question's feel free to ask them. I will try and answer them. Also I will make a skin for the client for beepingcomputers.com

Here is a screenShot of it in action

Great post and looking forward to the skin!

Also if anyone is interested in a making a logo for the folding, feel free  It asked and I am pointing to a fake one currently. For those who may have used SETI in the past, this is a very similar process, but as Brunt said it is for a good cause!

And for those who want to see videos that provide a powerful description of Folding then you can take a look at these:

Can one participate even if on a slow dial-up connection?

Or is this best suited for those with DSL or Cable connections?
The only easy day was yesterday.

...some do, some don't; some will, some won't (WR)

Good Question KoanYorel.. Yes you can participate with dial up. There is an option in there to dial a connection when folding is done. You can uncheck it that way Only when you go online will it download a new protien. It doesnt matter if you have dsl or dialup it works off of your unused cpu cycles.not your internet speed. Glad to have you aboard!!

I just wanted to add don't be put off by that it may take 3 to 10 days to finish one protein those are worth the most point's. Hence the competition.

Here are some of the movies for FAH

Well I only have it on my power pc. My other 2 are (well ones my wifes and I have to clean that out everyday) because she dont understand Gator (gain) and having all those extra toolbars bad :flowers: ... the other one is the one I am on all the time and I keep it around 25% usage so I can do my stuff. So if I get a large protien as you always do the first one it cold take 20 days to finish on25%. Thats a good idea though. Install it on all the pc's I build  ..

I have a few questions:
*Is the screensaver the same as the Graphical client in fullscreen?
*Does F@H only consume CPU power that's not being used? Like can I set it to 100% but it will only use 100% when I'm not doing anything?
*What is WU?
There are 10 kinds of people. Those who understand binary notation, and those who do not.

HuckerJ,
the screensave is not really a"screensaver" if you want it to show on your desktop it will otherwise you will just see a little like rachet in your taskbar, If you put it to 100% it will slow some things down, unless you have a hyperthreading cpu. If when you game or shoting like that intense you can pause it and it wont bother anything. And a WU is a work unit. Some are 25 points all the way up to 255 points the biggerr the point value the longer it takes. You dont get to choose what WU you get it chooses it for you, I just happend to get a high point WU and the one im working on now is another high point on.

Scarlett, I know it makes you want to do it I love those videos I will look for some more!

Im signed in, and up and running, using the same user name. Thanks alot for the information on such a good cause. I do have a question though.

In the screen shot that you provided, it looks really nice, but mine doesnt look the same-I only have one window open, with 3 icons in the taskbar. Would you mind providing the options that you used and the applications? Im sorry if you had already mentioned it in a previous post.

BTW I thought that folding was actually about clothes, as a joke, until I read more about it. lol
We are all curious like a cat. We wonder, we ask, we learn.
Please post back when a suggestion works, so that others may learn.

JEservices Welcome to the team.!!! As for my screen shot I also have the electron microscope running. Download it here. It tells you how many point's your work unit is worth and how long it will take to finish. The first one you get usually takes the longest to do but is worth the most points exept in my case  My second one is taking forever since my son love to turn my coputer on and off so had to run out and get another case that locks! If you download it and have any problems setting it up post back! Again Welcome to the team!!!
