Although exploiting multiple layers on a CD is interesting, its use is limited.  Here's some research for hard disks:

 

data density higher than 10 terabytes per square inch

PS: And all that being done, loosing such media means loosing LOTS of data. :bubbles:

Yeah way more than the average home user would ever use but enterprise would have a use for such a thing.
