I got a few pictures that's partly greyed out.

They are fixable, Stellar Repair for Photo works but I don't have the money at the moment.

Any freeware suggestions?

There are two possible free solutions.

1) JPEG Repair Shop. But judging by your previous topic, you do not trust this program.

2) JPEGfix - https://overquantum.livejournal.com/9832.html This is a program from a Russian developer. And all instructions are in Russian, but this can be solved with the help of a Google translate.

All other program are paid. How many corrupted files do you have?

I tried JPEG Repair Shop, but didn't succeed.

The program closes when I press fix colours.

In my opinion Stellar Photo Repair is a very useful tool and I have heard many good things about it. Greyed out Photos could be easily fixed with this tool. You should go for it as there are some discount coupons which you can avail and get it on low price.

The trouble is it sounds like you are trying to recreate data which isn;t there, extrapolate what should be in the greyed areas. My guess would be the only solution would be manual work with a tool like GIMP, or otherwise perhaps some AI type too, which attempts to guess from the forms around the greyed area what will be within the greyed area.
Back to visiting this site, every so often, been so busy in previous years.

I have had jpegs that haven't opened properly.  I opened them in Irfanview and they were fine.  Then I saved them and they worked in the other programs.  This will only work in a few unique situations.
