Hi All, I hope some bright spark! can point me in some useful direction.

I have an XPS 13 9365 Laptop which has worked perfectly over the last 2-3 years.

Last night it failed to boot up and shows:

    Booting from Hard Drive C

    No Boot Device Avalaible

Current Boot Model is set to BIOS

Please ensure compatible Bootable Media is Available

Use System Setup Program to change the Boot Mode

Any ideas please?

(I have removed the PSU Cable, then the Battery, discharged by pressing ON Button and reinstated everything) but exactly the same.

I had an SSD Backup Clone Chip which I swapped but still the same.

What other tests should I carry out PLEASE?

(I suspect it is some software corruption issue as the laptop was inactive whilts the error occurred).

I have a 'cloned drive' copy, so if I can get the laptop to boot up I should be able to recover my files.

Thank you!

The hard drive has most likely failed or Windows has been corrupted. The first thing I would do is tap F12 at boot and do a System Diagnostic.

If you get the error because Windows has been corrupted you can boot a live linux distro like Mint or Hirens PE from a USB flash drive to see if you can mount the drive and read data.

Thank you JohnC_21 for your prompt reply.

Yes, I suspect a windows corruption and I am happy to rebuild the laptop if I need to.

ANd, yes - I did run Diagnostics and it gave me a Critical Error Message, Error Code: 2000-0151, Validation:71706

Gard drive 0 - S/NUFZNP01J169CBL Incorrect status = 48.

Support Site (with the Service Tag and it said 'Unavailable right now, try in a few minutes.' No matter how many times I tried I got the same response, so I could not take it further.

Could you please outline (simply) what steps I need to take to make 'bootable live linux distro like Mint or Hirens PE from a USB flash drive'?

(I can follow instructions even if I do not fully understand the process!

THANK YOU again!

Follow FreeBooter's advice to see if it fixes your problem. Below are instructions for booting Linux Mint or Hirens PE should you decide to do so.

You may need to disable Secure Boot in your BIOS/UEFI settings in order to boot Mint.

On another computer download Linux Mint Cinnamon.

https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

If the computer is Windows 10 right click the iso file and select Mount. Copy all the files in the opened window to a 4GB or larger USB flash drive formatted FAT32. After the copy open This PC and look for a Virtual DVD. Right click and select unmount. Attach the USB flash drive to your XPS computer and tap F12 while booting to access the boot menu. Select the USB flash drive.

At the Mint Desktop click the folder in the lower left and select your hard drive to see if it mounts and lists the data on the drive.

Hirens PE will also work as it's based on Windows 10. You can download the iso file and use Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive. Select GPT as a partition scheme. Rufus can also be used with the Linux Mint iso file.

Hi again

I have spent this morning following your JohnC_21 suggestion without success! Let me outline what I have done:

1. I have created a USB Flash Drive formstted FAT32

2. I have downloaded Linux Mint Cinnamon onto it & dismounted

3. I have plugged it in the XPS Laptop & rebooted

4. I pressed F12 and adjusted the BIOS Settings to:

4a. Ticked Enable UEFI Network Stack (unticked Enable Legacy Option ROMs)

4b. Boot Sequence - selected UEFI (ticks on UEFI Enable USB Disk 2.0 and a long number)

4c. BIOS Setup Advanced Mode is Ticked

4d. UEFI Boot Path Security is set on Always Except Internal HDD

4e. SATA Operation is set to RAID

4f. Drfives Set to M2 PCle SSD

4g. Secure Boot Unticked

4h. POST Behaviour Fastbook Ticked Thorough

4i. Maintenance BIOS Recovery Set to Bios Recovery from Hard Drive

4j. SupportAssist BIOS Connect Ticked Enable BIOSConnect

I have saved BIOS on Custom Settings, and tried various combinations

I just can't seem to get it to boot from the USB. It goes into SupportAssist Pre-Boot System Performance Check, Bleeps and displayes a Critical Error Message:

    Service Tag: 963DYF2

    Error Code: 2000-0151

    Validation: 130460

Hard Drive 0 - S.N Long Number Incorrect Status 48

It suggests I plug these into the Dell site but when I do I get 'It appears we have an issue, please wait a few moments & try again'

So, I seem to be stuck! Any suggestions? Are there Other BIOS Settings that I need to tweak also?

As, always - I very much appreciate your support!

(Is it possible that the BIOS is corrupt? in which case is there a way round this?)

HELP!

Dell hard drive error code 2000-0151 indicates your hard drive is near to the end of its life or has failed

https://www.minitool.com/backup-tips/dell-error-code-2000-0151.html

I would see if using Rufus with the Mint iso changes anything. If not then I would download HirensPe and use Rufus to create the bootable USB flash drive. RAID should actually be set to AHCI.  If you are able to access and change settings in your UEFI settings I don't think your BIOS is corrupted. I would also tick use Legacy Option Roms as this will allow one to boot something that is Legacy or UEFI.

Is the below image your boot menu? Under UEFI boot do you see the Mint iso USB flash drive? If yes, then use the arrow key to highlight and press enter.

As always - THANK YOU JohnC_21.

I don't get the screen you showed me. See instead mine:

https://www.imghippo.com/i/ap4p71720024572.jpg

(I don't know if what I've done will show the images - I was hoping that I could attach the .peg's directly but instead I had to use a utility imghippo

Please advise me if there is an easier way - I am keen to learn).

Anyway, I played with RAID & AHCI - no difference.

With regards your comment on Quote: Dell hard drive error code 2000-0151 indicates your hard drive is near to the end of its life or has failed

I don't think I have an HDD as I am using an SSD (apologies if I misunderstood the comment).

I will see if I can have more luck with your other suggestions.

Another comment that you may be able to decypher better than I!

I did have a duplicate SSD chip which I clond using Macrium Reflex. I have tried swapping the SSDs and I get exactly the same outcome. Does this give you any more clues what is going on?

Thank you again - I am very grateful that you are taking time from what else you do to hold my hand!
