PC boot issue (VGA light is on, no display)

Having issues with my PC not booting properly. The GPU doesn't seem to turn on/light up during boot, but everything else does. Usually turning PC off and on again has fixed it. Been having this for maybe a month or two? Now it refuses to detect GPU at all.

CPU: Ryzen 5700x
GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6750 XT
Mobo: Asus Strix B550-F Gaming Wifi II (MSI B450 Tomahawk Max before)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3600 - 64GB (2x32GB)
PSU: EVGA GQ 750W Gold+
OS: Win 11

I had this issue before with MSI mobo and just rebooted it every now and then, until the PC just wouldn't detect the GPU at all. I tried with different GPU (GTX 1070) and found out PCIe slot 2 was working for both GPUs. Did some troubleshooting with a helpful IT guy at some Discord server and went through unplugging everything, resetting CMOS and reseating both GPU and CPU before plugging everything back one by one (booting after each addition, with no issues)​ and everything was fine for maybe a week. The issue returned. We assumed it might be a faulty mobo, so I got a new one (Asus). The new one has been working fine for maybe a month. Now, VGA light turns on, the system runs, but no image on the monitor.

My next suspect is a faulty PSU, but I'd like some comments from people who are much more knowledgeable than I am...

Hi, Welcome to BC.

Doing what you are doing with all the reboots probably corruption.

Pull the GPU and re-seat it.

Pull the CMOS battery out for a few mins and while unplugged push in the power button to bleed off stored PSU power.

If you have had this issue before then it is either the PSU or the M/B.

If you have been overclocking the GPU that also could be your issue.  Since had a MSI where you using the overclock tool on the Sapphire ? as well as the MSI before it died ??

See if it is a Windows thing and boot Linux up from USB.

Thanks. Will try the GPU reseat and CMOS. Will test the Linux once I'm done with work.

The Asus mobo is about a month old, brand new since the first assumption was that the MSI mobo was faulty. Apparently that maybe was not the case... The PSU I believe is the from original build from 2017. I do not think I have changed it since. Would faulty PSU only affect the boot? I have not had system crashes or anything like that. The PC works fine once it boots, which is kinda puzzling to me.

I have done some overclock/undervolting through the AMD Adrenalin. Will reset the settings, if I get to that point. No MSI Afterburner, I didn't overclock my old GTX 1070.

GPU was bought in May 2023, and I think I started using the Adrenalin settings pretty soon after. The issues started much later on in 2024. I did upgrade my RAM and CPU though, but shouldn't there be either CPU or DRAM light on the mobo if either of those were causing the issue?

EDIT: Oh. It started again with no issues. Though it did boot me into BIOS, and I did reset the settings there.

EDIT 2: Did the reseat and CMOS clear. Seems to boot fine (for now). BIOS and Adrenalin has been set to default. No overclock or undervolt until the issue clears for good.

Hi, So glad things are up.

It is not a good idea to be under/over volting anything.  Those brand new / Modern should not need to.  If want to Void your Warranty do so.

When Doing a Clean Install you do the below re for Drives ...

When you got the new Motherboard did you format the HDD/SSD and Delete all Partitions, System, UEFI and C:    ??

If not you are carrying around the previous installed drivers for the MSI Motherboard.

Then Activate it From Settings-->System-->Activate

Disconnect from the Internet.

Turn off : ASUS Fast Boot in BIOS for the same reasons as below :

Never ever take Microsoft Update Video Driver, never, ever.

Connect back to the internet.

The PSU from 2017 maybe good or maybe not. 7yrs old.  (I have used older) But for a 150 bucks or less a 750 W Corsair or something since everything is almost new would be a wise choice. 

As per Rule of thumb for Desktop Parts is 7yrs old is Outdated or should be thinking of replacing.

Re issues and lights, no and maybe.  Download and read your manual.   CPU issue is usually Dead and no lights no nothing, even the PSU will not start up.

PSU issue if does not turn on 1st time.    Push all PSU cables in again to proper places, if is modular make sure tight in the PSU body.

Could be your Overclock was the issue as well.  Would have to run it at proper specs.

Maybe the switch is loose in the case.

Ram light should come on.

Since is a ROG Board it should have a LED Panel showing the Boot Code Errors, see manual for codes displayed on the panel.

VGA light issue happened again this morning, but managed to turn on on 2nd reboot. This was with everything set to default in BIOS and Adrenalin, no overclock or even XMP. Going to order a new PSU regardless, since it is getting old. Corsair seems to get good reviews, so will probably go with that.

Did a full Win 11 clean install as per instructions, since it has been on my mind anyway and now is the perfect time to start with a clean setup. Chipset installed. Fast boot and fast start disabled.

Unfortunately this mobo does not come with a LED error code display, which is a shame. Would maybe have saved me a headache or two.

But anyway, thank you for your assistance for so far! I'll be posting how things turn out once the new PSU is installed.

Yes the LED Code Panel is really great, guess need to be up a few more steps in the ROG M/B's.  At one time all ROG Boards had them.  Not many to choose from then.

It can make a difference as well ASUS may not RMA the Board unless using them.   Not unknown for a board to come out of the factory and not working properly.

No. Still happening.

Starting the troubleshooting from the beginning. Cleared CMOS, and took out the RX 6750 XT and put in my old GTX 1070. DDU and new drivers. Seems to start ok for now, but will need to test it more.

The VGA light issue seemingly happens only during a cold boot (first thing in the morning). But now I need to keep an actual log when it happens.

If still issues run from a Admin CMD Prompt : SFC /SCANNOW and reboot if fixes anything.
