I have a program that would make use of COM1 to dial out phone numbers.

For some reason since a couple of days ago the app can no longer dial out.

At first it complained about COM1 port.

Now it doesn't complain, it just isn't able to dial out.

I checked Device Manager and it show COM1 as functioning OK.

Any ideas what I should check next?

During my printer problem a few days ago I could have sworn I saw COM1 pop up at one point.

My printer uses a USB port though.

What App

Thanks for helping Dan.

The app is Ecco Pro, a rock solid DOS app that still has a cult following for its usefulness.

Over the years I have had similar dialing out issues, but have always been able to get it working again.

This is not a hardware issue, but software-related.

What errors do you get?

What errors do you get?

Well that's the funny thing.

A couple of days ago it kept giving this error:

"Serious communications line error. Check settings and connections."

I tried changing the port to COM2,3 4 etc but still got the error.

Then that message disappeared completely after I was getting my printer to work.

Now if I change the port from COM1 to COM2,3 or 4   I get the above-mentioned error.

So it's happy with the COM1 setup, but something is stopping it from dialing out.

This is a software-related issue not hardware-related.

Unplug the printer and try.

But it didn't help.

Download and install Speccy - https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

Run it, and then go to File and Publish Snapshot. Post the resulting link in your next reply

I am going with that some ancient code was removed from Windows 10 which is causing this program to no longer work. Do a search and you will see that Windows 10 2004 stopped allowing ancient programs like Ecco Pro to no longer work due to the outdated code in those third party programs.

I'm willing to bet you $500 US that you are wrong.

Are you up for it?

Your Speccy is not showing any other serial device but your printer connected.

OK.

But my modem is powered up with its lights on as usual and Windows is recognizing it.

And Windows is showing COM1 working properly.

I just queried the modem now with all results, successful.

Windows shows it connected to COM1  in Device Manager.

Setting up Dial-Up Networking is only helpful for using the modem for Internet access.  I strongly doubt Ecco Pro requires that.

How did you query the modem?  Was it with Ecco Pro or with some terminal program?
