Computer: HP Pavilion 500-164

Windows 10

Modem: Motorola MB7220 8x4 DOCSIS 3.0 Purchased 11/2019

Router: Linksys E3200 Purchased 7/2012

ISP: Cox

For maybe a few months now, maybe longer, I have been getting momentary messages "Can't find this site." Happens numerous times during the day. Many different websites. Sometimes lasts a few seconds. Sometimes a minute or so. Always connects at the end of the interval.

The incoming coax cable is connected to the router.

The router is connected to the modem by ethernet cable.

The modem is connected to the computer by ethernet cable..

What I have done so far is taken the router out of the circuit and connected the incoming cable to the modem and the modem directly to the computer.

No change. Still getting disconnects.

I obtained my modem's event log. Looks rather alarming. I hope somebody can explain it to me. The last entry was Sunday the 16th but I have had disconnects since then, including a couple today. I notice that the events are grouped about a week or two apart, yet I get the disconnects every day.

If it matters, I ran an internet speed test. 100 mbps down, 12 mbps up. No issues there.

I have not called Cox. Can't call Motorola, they want an email.  I have not run any tests on the router.

Attached is the log.

Thanks for the help.

Hi , if not done so : Linksys E3200 === https://www.linksys.com/support-article?articleNum=49959

As well : Motorola MB7220 8x4 DOCSIS 3.0 === https://en-us.support.motorola.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/178130/~/check-what-firmware-version-your-modem-or-router-is-running

and off that link : https://en-us.support.motorola.com/app/usb-drivers   Note anything that is 5yrs old is too old.

Now there does seem to be a epidemic of WiFI issues on 10/ /11 it, could just be a MS thing they have yet admitted to.

NOTE : Your system is NOT Win 10 Supported.  With that comes Windows 10 End of Life October 2025.  So look to future proof next system for 11 and above, 16 to 32 gig of ram.

So as per the system am sure it has been installing Microsoft Update Drivers for your : Atheros Wireless Network Controller Driver  as your HP last supported Drivers were 2013 :

https://support.hp.com/si-en/drivers/hp-pavilion-500-100-desktop-pc-series/model/5399025

You can try these commands : Reset the network on the system

Open Settings
Click on Network & Internet
Click on Status
Click on Network reset
Click the Reset now button
Click Yes to confirm and let your computer restart

It may take a few extra time for the system to completely reboot since it is rebuilding the network then try the network and let us know.

The other way is to run some commands through the Administrator Command Prompt.

Open an Administrator Command Prompt

Type or Copy/Paste : the following commands, pressing Enter after each command:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
netsh int reset all
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh int ipv6 reset
netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the computer     NOTE : Some of these maybe depreciated and no longer run.

Since we know nothing other than the info provided so far

Please Post a "link" of Speccy Report.

I have been getting momentary messages "Can't find this site.".........................Many different websites.

It sounds very much like a name-resolution (DNS) problem. The server may be slow to process requests.

Manually change the DNS servers for your computer's active network adapter to use CloudFlare or Google DNS servers - it should take you just a few minutes to implement.

Call Cox sounds like it's a problem with your modem or something else.

Response to pkshadow. I'll defer the other suggestions for now.

1 - Installed current modem drivers from Motorola.

2 - HP support only goes to Win 8. No biggie.

3 - Network status - Connected.

4 - Performed network reset and restarted computer.

5 - I kept running those commends with command prompt as administrator from C\windows\system32> and kept getting told command not recognized.

6 - Here is the link to Speccy Report:

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/vkks2NOVUqJytSUAiC3jDY0

7 - Minitools results:

Hi, not sure why commands did not work, may have needed to be in the root of        C\>

Use Geek or Revo Uninstaller to remove programs as they remove more. As does the paid version which also can monitor installs and get it all.

Remove Adobe DC Reader, causing all the Error issues : Application errors:  in various places including System Kernel.    If just need to view PDF's most modern browsers can do that.

May not be compatible to your M/B do to it's age.

Spent hours on this one :

- Error: (07/02/2024 03:30:46 PM) (Source: Microsoft-Windows-TPM-WMI) (EventID: 1796) (User: NT AUTHORITY)
Description: The Secure Boot update failed to update a Secure Boot variable with error -2147020471. For more information, please see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2169931

As to why getting it when M/B can not go to Win11 am not sure.  Ignore for now.

Windows Defender:
================
Microsoft Defender Antivirus has encountered an error trying to update security intelligence and will attempt to revert to a previous version. Error Code: 0x80070003

Again ADOBE : ADODB.dll that did not meet the Microsoft signing level requirements.    Do you scan all your PDF's before opening ??

Getting into serious problems of Protection.

- mscorsvw.exe is part of Windows Update and fails.  and why running : stdole.dll  as part of a OFFICE Configuration which a home computer should not be a part of.  If this was a previous Office Computer, things were not removed that should have been or were only partially removed.

- Always make sure running Current Version and is there really any point to running CPUID CPU-Z 1.78 anymore at all ??
If used for Overclocking somewhere return to stock settings.

- Remove : SUPERAntiSpyware  IMHO a glorified Cookie finder.  As well it is a A/V program now and cannot run 2 A/V at the same time.

- Is Malwarebytes a free or paid version, if either do you have in Settings the Tab to integrate with Windows Security Center ?? make sure it is off as again if on
it Replaces MS Defender with it's own non-standard A/V Program

Way too much stuff that is no longer useful on the motherboard.    Need to start getting a new System that will support Win 11 and above
as Windows 10 End of Life October 2025.

Suggest stopping Windows from trying to Update this : Hewlett-Packard USB driver update as they fail.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/146562-prevent-windows-update-updating-specific-device-driver.html

Failing to install Windows 2004 and other stuff.

BC Advisor - Thank you so much for your help.

A little history - I bought this computer in 2016 from a recycler for $8. It had a physically broken motherboard but had a 2TB hard drive and USB 3 ports so I figured it couldn't be too old, worth the gamble. I bought a replacement motherboard. $60 from China (another gamble), installed it, turned it on and it worked. I checked the BIOS date - 2014. Practically new computer for $68. I formatted the hard drive to clean out HP's bloatware and installed a fresh copy of Win 7. Since then I doubled the RAM to 16, upgraded the power supply when I got a new video card and replaced a CPU fan. I ran Win 7 until 2020 when I upgraded to Win 10 Pro. I have about $200 in this computer. It doesn't owe me anything but I hope to squeeze a couple more years out of it and Win 10. I avoided Win 11 due to the complaints.

Here's what I've done so far as a result of yesterday's advice.

Hi, not sure why commands did not work, may have needed to be in the root of        C\>

You're right. I ran the commands from C\>. I think they all worked but one. Don't remember which. Anyway, I saw immediate improvement. Restarts were faster. Website connections were faster.

Use Geek or Revo Uninstaller to remove programs as they remove more. As does the paid version which also can monitor installs and get it all.

Got the free edition of Geek. 64 bit.

Remove Adobe DC Reader,

Done.

Ignored. It's all "geek" to me anyway. Pun intended.

Windows Defender:
================
Microsoft Defender Antivirus has encountered an error trying to update security intelligence and will attempt to revert to a previous version. Error Code: 0x80070003

Again ADOBE : ADODB.dll that did not meet the Microsoft signing level requirements.

All that went over my head. But Adobe is gone so I'll defer trying to suss that out for a while.

Do you scan all your PDF's before opening ??

I haven't. Should I? And scan with what?

- mscorsvw.exe is part of Windows Update and fails.  and why running : stdole.dll  as part of a OFFICE Configuration which a home computer should not be a part of.  If this was a previous Office Computer, things were not removed that should have been or were only partially removed.

Not sure what you are telling me there. I ran a clean install of Office 2010 way back when.

- Always make sure running Current Version and is there really any point to running CPUID CPU-Z 1.78 anymore at all ??
If used for Overclocking somewhere return to stock settings.

CPUID CPU-Z 1.78 uninstalled.

- Remove : SUPERAntiSpyware  IMHO a glorified Cookie finder.  As well it is a A/V program now and cannot run 2 A/V at the same time.

Super AntiSpyware removed.

- Is Malwarebytes a free or paid version,

Free.

if either do you have in Settings the Tab to integrate with Windows Security Center ?? make sure it is off as again if on

It's off.

== Devices: ==  No idea what drivers it needs from here : https://ftdichip.com/drivers/ for USB Serial Converter

ATMEL Corp no longer in Biz : AT91 USB to Serial Converter

I'm not using any USB to Serial cables. I disabled the device. Will that do it?

Way too much stuff that is no longer useful on the motherboard.

I've already uninstalled a few things. The rest - some I use regularly, some not often but want to keep. I'll see about doing more house cleaning.

Need to start getting a new System that will support Win 11 and above
as Windows 10 End of Life October 2025.

Oh, I think I can get another year or two out of this computer. Maybe Win 12 will be out by then.

Will defer that for the moment.
