The debate over systemd vs init is a long-complicated one as systemd is hated by some in the linux community due to its binary nature thus is harder to fix bugs.
MX was created with a lightweight system in mind, and systemd can be very heavy on some systems (see antiX)
MX maintains debian with init as opposed to systemd for this reason.
Now of course it could always switch to a Devuan, but even openRC has its downsides compared to init in terms of compatibility.
Plus Duvuan is a bit slower on the updates.
