Like rp88, I mostly just use Amazon for purchasing stuff. I've got no quibbles with the speed of their deliveries, or with how easy they make the entire process from start to finish.

The only other thing I have going with them is that I bought a FireStick 2-3 years ago. Mainly so that Mama - who's housebound, and has quite severe mobility issues now - can watch some of her favourite programs at a time that suits her. BBC's iPlayer and ITV's "X" network work very well on this thing.....and I DO like the way it just plugs permanently into an HDMI port on the back and remains there, hidden from view.

But I have to agree with the "shady practices" bit!

I'll take my chances with the sellers on ebay at least most of the sellers or at least the sellers I've dealt with were just plain down right honest folks and not some big rip off corporation like Amazon but to each their own.

In many years of buying off ebay I've only on bad purchase and the seller remedied that right off and doubled my order for his mistake and my inconvenience so no complaints here.

Purchases made from eBay may not be covered under manufacturers warranty as what happened to me.

Everything I buy from ebay is used and or pulled from a working product and usually don't have any warranty except from the seller to be the product shown and to be in good working condition and I've never been disappointed.

Warranties are important when buying new product but I have no problems or complaints with buying used as long as I know it's used when I'm looking at it.

If you sell on eBay as part of a business or professional activity, you must provide consumer guarantees when selling to buyers in Australia.

Visit the ACCC website for more information about consumers' rights and your obligations - opens in new window or tab.

That Amazon is making it's own Linux distro is irrelevant for me, I don't buy their devices and even if it was a desktop OS, what I'm using works as needed, does it well .....and I don't trust Amazon that much  lol.

But, I do buy from them and it's worked out ok. Mostly things I can't find locally.

eBay.....not a fan. Bought one item altogether, and only because I was familiar with the product and the seller.

I just do not shop online because it costs local jobs and affects local business

Me too I wont use it. You can almost bet dedicated Linux users will examine it under a microscope for anything nefarious.

I understand that and prefer to and do buy local when I can find what I need at a reasonable price.

Most local shops here don't carry what I'm shopping for and until they start carrying what I want than it's online shopping for me.

The days of the old fashion on the street corner surplus stores and shops are a thing of the past and have been for awhile.

As for Amazon OS they will be as bad as Google Chrome leaching and sucking the last bit of personal data from every user.

I don't care what people know about my web searches it's the way and the how they get it which I'm opposed to.

Unless I'm the one doing the sneaking than I have no use for sneakers other than live moving targets for my 357 magnum.  :lmao:  :hysterical:

Amazon delivery drivers are local. You can make 22 an hour in Baltimore being an Amazon driver.

Similar here.

Locally, too often when I need it.....it's 'seasonal' and not available.

Or....we don't stock that part and no longer have a listing.

Like my finish mower.....the belt broke and Tractor Supply is no longer a distributor for that manufacturer, an Italian company that decided not to warehouse parts for the US models that TS sold.

An uncommon length belt with an Amazon listing at a reasonable price.

Tractor parts?

Ford Holland pulled out on my region decades ago.

Steiner is my online go to outlet for my 9N and 2000.

Yep same old song and dance we no longer stock that or it's no longer manufactured of course the sales person didn't bother to tell you that at the time of purchase.

I believe a lot of it is due to the fact that today's products are just made cheap and when the product breaks ya toss it in the trash and buy another one and the fact that most of today's generation probably just doesn't repair anything.

I just don't understand today's generation of thinking but I'm old and I bet my parents and grand parents said the same about my generation huh.

Back in the good old days of Windows 98 there was an old man who lived a few doors down and he told me that this internet thing would change people's privacy as never before.

Of coarse I didn't believe him and thought he was full of it but as it turned out the old man was very knowledgeable and wise about these things more so than I gave him credit for.

He was right.

The internet didn't change that, it's called peiples lack of understanding technology and how the internet is global. The internet existed far before Windows 98 did and predates windows 3.11.

I pretty much agree.

I'm aware that the internet predates Windows 98 and Windows 3.1x.

However Google and Microsoft have analytic software to collect user data regardless of user ability and knowledge although I may be wrong but I don't think so and I'm not trying to start any argument either.

I believe it's even stated the ELUA somewhere that user data is collected to be used for the most part however they like although claim to scrub the private and personal user data who knows if that's really true or not.

It's just harder to stay under the wire nowadays imo.

The existence of the Internet had an immense affect on privacy.

Without it.....there wouldn't be the massive data base breaches occurring and the resultant fraud and identity thefts occurring.

Most people mistakenly think their own computer is the most vulnerable security/privacy vector of their privacy.
