Can you write something up please and we can see about getting it pinned

Yes, I can do that however I would want it to be throrough while at the same time not overwhelming to a New-to-Linux user so that might take some time.

Dont write it from a experts point of view. Look at it as if its the first time you ever saw a Linux distro. Pretend you are a average XP user and you wish to migrate to Linux.

Eg

Distro name LTS how easy it is to set up, install software etc then some cons, Like its unstable, you get the idea. Then we can see about getting it pinned. Feel free to site pm me if you think I can help you.

maybe we should start a thread asking for newbies experiences. I was a newbie so long ago I am useless to help in this arena.

A/V Software? I don't need A/V software. I've run Linux since '98 w/o A/V software and have never had a virus. I never even had a firewall until '01 when I began to get routers with firewalls pre installed. With Linux if a vulnerability is detected a fix is quickly found and then upon your next update the vulnerability is patched.  If you must worry about viruses  on a Linux system only worry about them in the sense that you can infect a windows user. I recommend Linux Mint or, if you need a lighter weight operating system that fits on a cd, MX14 or AntiX.

Certainly...that is how I planned to approach it...that is what I meant by not being overwhelming but still being thorough enough to be useful.

I think it would be fascinating to have a thread with something like "New to Linux? What confuses you, what concerns you and what intrigues you?". I think that would he so interesting to get responses for.

I think it being pinned is a mistake and leaving it be is just allowing the issue to continue. Regardless of how long it takes for me to make an alternative, I think it is better to not have this thread pinned than having it because it doesn't actually provide a benefit. It is not common that someone would read pages of threads in the 20s so I doubt people who see this thread will ever see this conversation so they will still have the assumption that this quiz is useful when it isn't.

PMing raw now.

Edit: PM Sent

This is all speculation until we receive an outcome from the op, but I would beg to have a differing opinion to a couple of the comments you have made above.

Not so. If you follow this link, you will see, at #146, where I came into the Topic - 2nd August. So in 3 months and 23 days, we are currently at page 27 and #394. Do the maths (math) - nearly 6 pages a month added, and over two (2) posts a day, average. That is reasonable-sized activity for an extended period of time, and all those extra pages fall into the category of current information.

It is not common that someone would read pages of threads in the 20s so I doubt people who see this thread will ever see this conversation so they will still have the assumption that this quiz is useful when it isn't.

Beg to differ - and more fool them if they do not fast-track to the end to get to the newest material.

If you take a look at this screenshot of page 1:

OOmN4Nx.png

... let's examine what we see:

  • It says Page 1 of 27 - "twenty-seven?!" you might gasp. And it visibly shows options of 3 pages at a time until you get to page 5, whereby it proceeds with 5 pages at a time (but you probably know this, as you have been here almost 8 years?).
  • Further options are Next, and then a double chevron pointing right which takes you to the end of the Topic, currently page 27

If I were coming into this Topic for the first time, I might take the (perhaps) obsolete quiz, read a page or two, and then fast-track to the end to see if the Topic is current, or whether it lapsed after a year or two and just had not been unpinned/closed and removed, by oversight. Once I found it IS current, I would then work back to an arbitrary point.

I might also use the better-than-average Search facility this site provides to see if there is useful data on a Linux Distro I am thinking of trying, (with or without Advanced Search) eg Ubuntu (132 results), Mint (87), Puppy (24), Zorin (25) - you get the picture.

If you are capable of accepting the premise postulated above, then it is nonsensical for people to NOT read into the 20s (pages).

Think about it

BTW - I forked the linked Topic from this one 17 September, as for a few pages this one was drifting off-topic.

Edited - added BTW

Points made as has been said. This topic will stay until a replacement is created. Open to suggestions. I will not unpin it until a replacement is created. Because if I do, nothing will fill the void. It will remain as a reminder to find suitable material to replace it.

But it is now closed.
