So, do any of you guys take any interest in gaming?
I used to be a Mario Kart addict when the SNES was the latest console, but now play games only occasionally. I still have a working SNES with over 20 games, which I dragged out recently to play SimCity, after being disappointed with the freeware version, Metropolis, which I installed then un-installed from my laptop.
Although I have a far more capable (but also old) desktop pc, I was keen to get something that would work well on my laptop which runs Kubuntu 12.04 and Puppy, and my gaming interests nowadays are restricted to flight sims, and games like SimCity and Command and Conquer. Nowadays I find racing games and many combat games to be too intense, and games such as Zelda and Doom to be too long-winded. I like something that I can play for a while, accomplish something, and not get killed or defeated quickly.
I also tried downloading an old version of Command and Conquer that the developers have now released as freeware, but it just wasn't as good as Red Alert 2 which I already have for Windows, so I un-installed that as well.
The only game I have installed and kept on my laptop is an old DOS game, Aces of the Pacific combat flight sim, which I installed to DosBox emulator. I was also interested to try DOS, to compare it to Linux commands, now that I have some basic experience in using the later. System requirements for the game itself are 4MB of hard drive space and 2MB of RAM, so at least my laptop doesn't have any problems running it smoothly. :D
On Kubuntu 14.04 on my desktop pc, the only 'game' I have tried so far is FlightGear - which works well enough, but I have yet to explore most of the settings and have only had a couple of brief flights in the default Cessna round about the default airport. Flying the plane is intuitive enough for anyone familiar with flight sims, but the menus etc are not, although it seems to be the best option for a free flight sim on Linux, so I reckon I'll stick with it.
It just so happens that I decided to have a look for another game for Kubuntu on my desktop pc last night, and in trying to decide between FreeCol and FreeCiv, both of which are Civilisation type games, which I haven't tried but would seem to be like a cross between Command and Conquer and SimCity; I ended up downloading a 'Transport Tycoon' type game called Open TTD instead. I haven't played one of them before either, and haven't even got round to playing this one yet, but it looks not unlike SimCity except with the emphasis on building transport.
Although a game like FreeCiv is what I was looking for, what put me off was a review that said that the original was 100 times better (which reminded me of my experience with the freeware version of Command and Conquer and Metropolis), and what put me off FreeCol was the fighting aspect.
Personally I often prefer older versions of games to newer ones, and I value ease of use and playability, over better graphics and seemingly endless amounts of options. For instance I have SimCity 3000 for the pc but I only ever bother with the old version on the SNES, and I have Command and Conquer 3 but I prefer Red Alert 2.
I also have a bunch of PlayStation games mostly for the PS1 although the console itself doesn't work any more, but fortunately I also have a little-used PS2 that I can play them on, as I gave up buying consoles and games shortly after I bought the PS2 when it was released. Although they are all stored away in a box somewhere, and I can't think of any PS games offhand I have that I would want to play nowadays anyway.
So if FreeCiv turns out to be the best available Civilisation-type game available for Linux, I may well give it a shot in due course, but I'll have a look for other options in the meantime and would be pleased to hear any suggestions anyone may have.
Thanks for posting that 0.AD video Nick. That's another game I came across last night and am currently considering.
