You have a point there NIck, but what if there were a picture (or a few) on the site that you didn't want to share with the world?

I do not upload ANY personal photos to ANY hosting site. In my opinion the minute you click upload you have no right to expect privacy.

I've found some privacy intrusions/flaws using Photobucket for an image hoster

I done some checking awhile ago, one can choose to lock the contents on Photobucket. It can be set so that a code is needed, or so one can share that image only.

Thought I'd pass it along. If these sites were that insecure, no one would be using them & trust me, since Wiz reported this yesterday, it has bothered me. If I felt the site was totally insecure, I'd advise everyone not to use it. Just go into the settings, it may take some digging around, luckily I found it in less than 10 minutes. About the time I posted pcpunk a screenshot in another Topic.

It's important to log out everytime the service is used to ensure security. Sometimes we close our browser & forget, just a reminder. I done the same thing on this forum once, forgot to log out & when I opened a link from my email the next day to a response, was still logged in. We're all human & prone to error, the thing is, to reduce this as much as possible for security.

In my opinion the minute you click upload you have no right to expect privacy

If one was uploading to a place such as Facebook or other social networking sites, I can go along with this. However to access these type of photo sites, requires the same as an email account access, a username & password. Provided the account owner logs out, that storage is supposed to be as confidential & locked down as email. If I have a lock on it (a password), then I have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

There's always the chance someone can crack their way in, if one recycles usernames & passwords for everything, that makes it easier. Treat these sites as email accounts & they should have just as much security. Only the content that one wishes to share will be posted.

Let's say you send me a link to a photo of your new car that you uploaded to Picturepail.com ( I wont use real company names), I love the photo and forward it to my brother, Now both of us can see all the photos in that folder and can follow links to more, With me so far? Then my brother forwards that photo to a friend who wants to buy a car same as yours, Next thing you know that photo is posted on some site.  See where I am going with this? Once that photo or photos are hosted some place regardless of any terms conditions or promises you have lost control of that photo.

Ok here's an example of what I mean.

I googled Wine photobucket.

It led me here.

http://photobucket.com/images/wine?page=1

Now click the second image. It will lead you here.

http://media.photobucket.com/user/pqsy4ka/media/wine-1.jpg.html?filters[term]=wine&filters[primary]=images&filters[secondary]=videos&sort=1&o=1

Now look to the right and see who it was uploaded by.

pqsy4ka

And click her name tell me what you see. Yes thats that uploaders page with all the photos she uploaded. I understand that she can make folders private etc, I however do not trust this. Howmany times have we heard " yes sir your files, credit card, medical history or what ever is safe with us, only to find that due to some exploit or disgruntled employee all your stuff has been leaked.

Sorry I do not trust this stuff.

Hi all,

I might be opening a can of worms here but.........I would like to discuss gaming & Linux.

Something that I am missing from my Linux install is the ability to play games....any games that are worth playing that is (a cloned version of the old arcade classic Galaga just is not going to do it for me)

The research that I have done points to access to games is improving for Linux (i.e Steam) however, searching for some titles has left me a little disappointed (not likley to see Arma III available for Linux which is a massive disappointment for me - one of the games I was keen to take a look at prior to ditching Windows).

So, do any of you guys take any interest in gaming?

If so, do you have any ideas on how gaming works on a Linux computer (i.e do these open source display drivers actually work with high end games and is there a lot of work to be done in order for the game to work in the first place?).

Agent_Orange, no I don't game, but as I understand it, gaming on Linux has improved in the last couple of years, there's a Steam for Linux in the Software Manager.

As to how it all works, well someone interested in gaming will have to respond. I'm basically letting you know that gaming developers are seeing Linux as a market. Titles are still limited, how much, I have no idea, but improvement is just that. Anything is better than nothing.

You can expect more support as time passes.

Roger that Cat - I will certainly be keeping an eye on any developments in that area.

For the time being I will see if I can amuse myself with "Warzone 2100" available for free from the Software Centre - not expecting much but butter than nothing!

Looks good Nic,

I might give that one a go if I can make heads or tails of the website that it is found on.

As for Warzone 2100   - not too bad for what it is - a nice little time waster.

So, do any of you guys take any interest in gaming?

I used to be a Mario Kart addict when the SNES was the latest console, but now play games only occasionally. I still have a working SNES with over 20 games, which I dragged out recently to play SimCity, after being disappointed with the freeware version, Metropolis, which I installed then un-installed from my laptop.

Although I have a far more capable (but also old) desktop pc, I was keen to get something that would work well on my laptop which runs Kubuntu 12.04 and Puppy, and my gaming interests nowadays are restricted to flight sims, and games like SimCity and Command and Conquer. Nowadays I find racing games and many combat games to be too intense, and games such as Zelda and Doom to be too long-winded. I like something that I can play for a while, accomplish something, and not get killed or defeated quickly.

I also tried downloading an old version of Command and Conquer that the developers have now released as freeware, but it just wasn't as good as Red Alert 2 which I already have for Windows, so I un-installed that as well.

The only game I have installed and kept on my laptop is an old DOS game, Aces of the Pacific combat flight sim, which I installed to DosBox emulator. I was also interested to try DOS, to compare it to Linux commands, now that I have some basic experience in using the later. System requirements for the game itself are 4MB of hard drive space and 2MB of RAM, so at least my laptop doesn't have any problems running it smoothly. :D

On Kubuntu 14.04 on my desktop pc, the only 'game' I have tried so far is FlightGear - which works well enough, but I have yet to explore most of the settings and have only had a couple of brief flights in the default Cessna round about the default airport. Flying the plane is intuitive enough for anyone familiar with flight sims, but the menus etc are not, although it seems to be the best option for a free flight sim on Linux, so I reckon I'll stick with it.

It just so happens that I decided to have a look for another game for Kubuntu on my desktop pc last night, and in trying to decide between FreeCol and FreeCiv, both of which are Civilisation type games, which I haven't tried but would seem to be like a cross between Command and Conquer and SimCity; I ended up downloading a 'Transport Tycoon' type game called Open TTD instead. I haven't played one of them before either, and haven't even got round to playing this one yet, but it looks not unlike SimCity except with the emphasis on building transport.

Although a game like FreeCiv is what I was looking for, what put me off was a review that said that the original was 100 times better (which reminded me of my experience with the freeware version of Command and Conquer and Metropolis), and what put me off FreeCol was the fighting aspect.

Personally I often prefer older versions of games to newer ones, and I value ease of use and playability, over better graphics and seemingly endless amounts of options. For instance I have SimCity 3000 for the pc but I only ever bother with the old version on the SNES, and I have Command and Conquer 3 but I prefer Red Alert 2.

I also have a bunch of PlayStation games mostly for the PS1 although the console itself doesn't work any more, but fortunately I also have a little-used PS2 that I can play them on, as I gave up buying consoles and games shortly after I bought the PS2 when it was released. Although they are all stored away in a box somewhere, and I can't think of any PS games offhand I have that I would want to play nowadays anyway.

So if FreeCiv turns out to be the best available Civilisation-type game available for Linux, I may well give it a shot in due course, but I'll have a look for other options in the meantime and would be pleased to hear any suggestions anyone may have.

Thanks for posting that 0.AD video Nick. That's another game I came across last night and am currently considering.

Nick, how do you post pic's here if you don't use a hosting site?  I am not too paranoid as I don't use it for much-but still am weary/not real comfortable with it.  There is one option in Photobucket that links a pic to all a persons content, I did not like that.  Now I will have to go and take a look at the options as cat said.

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.
