:thumbup2: No Worries Mate! I'm just looking into Mate a little also as one of my customers has it, so we can learn together.  Trust me, I was lost the first time I worked on his pc lol.  So used to Mint KDE and some other Mint's.  So I need to brush up a little on this popular distro.  I really get a kick out of the older crowd liking linux!

(bolded)

Approaching that status myself, I can confidently remark that it is because they feel it is the real deal. It is what computing should be.

Not a mish mach of cheap circus tricks and clowns that seek to grab your attention at every opportunity, and lead with a nose ring to their pastures.

But good, solid brilliant computing, and with a suite of software that puts shame to the 'pay for me, pay for me, go here,  join there' nagging of the other crowd.

Great to see you guys are enjoying Linux. Just quickly skip over that second threshhold, and you are out into the sweet air of freedom.

One tip I might proffer at this point. Styalise your desktop - the color of your icons, etc. Particularly backgrounds - well, there is a choice of so many beautiful ones - which to choose ..

Easy - you will see you can set it to change every so often - I've set mine to every five minutes, and most the time, I am presented with a gorgeous, uplifting scene that I sometimes, just find myself staring into ..

Hi Jargos ... I like the way Linux makes you feel man ... "the sweet air of freedom" says it all ... reading your experience was mindblowing ... right now I'm for a minimalistic approach ... sure in a couple of weeks I'll be looking for Roger Dean's wallpapers or stuff like that LOL ... me cousin told me to download 'teamviewer' cause he wants to give me a hand from where he lives now, teach me things about Linux, cause let's be honest : I don't want to bother you guys every time I got stuck with a stupid thing ... now if you know something about 'teamviewer' I'd aprecciate your take 'cause I'm completely in the dark ... is it safe ? ... now I completely trust the guy on the other end of the line.

No bother Terokal, at least for me, this is a hobby first and make a few bucks here and there with computer repair.  We all are learning and can learn by helping others.  I am even interested in this Teamviewer also.

TeamVeiwer is a great tool. I actually use it to log into my Ubuntu server I have at home. Makes it easy to just hop on to it and run updates and such. Definitely let your cousin help you out with Linux using TeamViewer Terokal!

Great then  ... it's football (can't use the word soccer) night in this neck of the woods (woods?, this city was built on a small valley surrounded by deserts) and the national team is a :ranting:  ... earlier Argentina vs. Brazil looks good if the sky doesn't fall upon Buenos Aires again ... so with the little help from D.C. using 'TeamViewer' and the games looks entertaining to say the least.

Thanks DeimosChaos and pcpunk !!! ... cheers.

. . . 'teamviewer' . . . is it safe . . . I completely trust the guy on the other end . . .

Terokal,

I use Teamviewer regularly.

Teamviewer uses some heavy encryption to send data back and forth between the client and server.

It uses the Teamviewer server to facilitate the connection, so that it will run through your router, without any special configuration.

That means you can use Teamviewer any where, as long as you have internet access.

Your id code should never change.  It is a 9 digit number that identifies who you are.

Your access code, that allows someone to connect to your computer, does change, every time you re-start the software.

That means that the fellow connecting to you will be locked out, if you close and restart Teamviewer, because the password from the previous session is no longer valid.

That being said, it is open to abuse, like any remote access software.

Your guest can set up a permanent access code, and enable Teamviewer to run in background, without telling you! (I have seen that happen!)

I suggest that you make sure you close the software, after each session.  Also, do not allow it to run as a service with a permanent access code.

Other than that, I have found no issues with it.

Cheers!

Naught

Great advice Naught! I have mine setup with an account so I can log in whenever, but I'm the only one with the password... as Naught said, I wouldn't recommend letting some one else do that with your PC.

For installing TeamViewer, the graphical installer is recommend (as it is easy and simple). The graphical installer can be invoked by (double) clicking the downloaded package.

Thanks NickAu, downloading it again ... I'll reinstall it ... my cousin started messing as soon as I gave him the codes ... well, we've been always like that ... as soon as he had the remote control he took me to a porn page :hysterical: ... then he shut it down and said : "later bro, I'm at the office" ... my hopes are that he's going to leave it better, tell me what I need and what's a waste, what hardware I definately should invest on, and give me a hand finding the programs (or better ones) he knows I was used to.

Cheers.

Hi Terokal, good to have you with us. :hello:

Make AlternativeTo.net your friend. For example Google up "alternative to ACDSee" and you will find, amongst others, Picasa and Shotwell which are very popular.

Shotwell ships with Ubuntu Mate, if you are using v15.04 or 15.10 it should be under Applications-Graphics.

I am sending this from Ubuntu 15.10 Mate (aka Wily Werewolf), 64-bit. I have it on a group of PCs running 12 Linux Distributions, so if you need help, sing out.

NickAu, jargos and I are a few of a number of Aussies here, and @pcpunk - how many times I gotta tell you, you are an honourary Aussie, lol.

Have fun, Terokal, I do with most everything in the Wonderful World of Linux!

:wizardball: Wizard

BTW - Peruvian national, or working there?

BTW Nick - "Queensland - beautiful one day, perfect the next"

Edited, added 2nd BTW

We can all only ever speak from our direct experience - it is what shapes our reality.

Yes, 'sweet air of freedom' is exactly how Linux makes me feel every time I use it.

I have no idea about teamviewer .. never heard of it before prior to just here. I assume it's some kind of remote access to ones machine ? I've never had need for that, if I ever do, will check it out then. My computering too, is on a minimalist, 'need to know' basis. Though I see others have commented here in response, I'm I'm sure those comments will be helpful to you.

Glad it's all going good for you. The folk here are terrific help.

Oh, and thanks for reading my thread. I considered that my trajectory in this worthwhile endeavour would well be similar to other 'dummies,' so that's one of the primary reasons for documenting it.
