I don't care what anybody else says, Nick. That 45 seconds is a good boot time for older hardware.

I expect Win 8 is running the 'Secure Boot' and 'hibernate'-related 'Quick Start' too, yes?

Yes, Believe it or not that had Vista on it, Now imagine that boot time.

I do not hibernate any of my machines, and the Win 8 Lappy has secure boot.

I can, quite easily. Somewhere around the 3 minute mark, minimum, as I recall from a rather sick Vista install one of my mates had, before I converted him to Puppy!

As rufwoof says, the kinda thing where you'd  power-on.....and head straight for the kettle!

Been there, done that.....

Not off topic because we are still talking about boot times and hard drive types, I added Windows 8 on SSD for comparison.

Here are some more boot times, on the same computers

9 year old custom built desktop pc with 7200 rpm HDD running Kubuntu 14.04.1:
26 seconds from pressing the power button to Grub boot menu.
23 seconds from Grub boot menu to log-in screen.
~20 seconds from log-in screen to desktop loaded and being ready to use.
So around 1 minute 9 seconds in total.

On this computer, XP takes 26 seconds to boot from selecting it in the Grub menu, to when the salt-cellar disappears. (I'm not running anti-virus software, and log in automatically). So that's around 52 seconds in total (not including time spent on the Grub boot menu).

12 year old laptop with 5400 rpm HDD running AntiX 16:
6 seconds from pressing power button to Grub boot menu.
44 seconds from Grub boot menu to log-in screen.
~10 seconds from log-in screen to window manager loaded and being ready to use.
Around 1 minute in total

On this computer, Lucid Puppy takes 43 seconds to boot, from selecting it in the Grub boot menu until it's ready to use, and a wifi connection has been established. Which is around 49 seconds total (not including time spent on the Grub boot menu)

How long did you mean?

When you say "about 5 seconds," it's reasonable to assume that you mean "about 5 (literal) seconds."

I am quite confident that everyone else who posted times in this thread, measured those times in "literal" seconds.

Reasons such as a thread going off-topic or otherwise breaking the rules would be enough for closure, but not because the OP asks. That is not good enough reason.

Interesting you've measured it to one hundredth of a second. I wasn't sure exactly when to say that my computer has finished booting, which is why I stated my boot times as being around one minute and nine seconds, and around 49 seconds etc.

What is it that you see happening, that lets you know your computer has finished booting?

IOW, what are you looking out for, so that you know to stop timing the boot process?

Your entire desktop still has to load, when the log-in screen appears.

User preferences are still to be set, /home directory still has to be loaded, depending on what user logs in.

This is for a Lubuntu VM stored on a 5400 RPM external harddrive, connected via USB3.0 (on a shared USB3.0 Hub).

About 2:25 from off to the login screen.
About 2:41 from off to logged in.

EDIT: deleted video, because site has a popup.
