Recover Data on Seagate Central NAS Drive

I have the same problem, the NIC on my Central stopped working, have been trying to solve it for days, I have a USB ubuntu and I can see the drive, but there is this error:

Can´t have a partition outside the disk.

 

Then I tried with DiskInternals Linux Reader, which seems to be an amazing solution, and I can see the Data Folder, but the strange thing is that the public folder seems to be empty, and there is where I have most of the files, I can retreive files from other users inside the Data partiion, but its very strange that I can´t see any of the public info. 

 

 

 

 

 

Have you mounted it using the instructions I posted? Sounds like your DiskInternals Linux Reader is not mounting it properly if you're missing data.

About diskinternals is a Windows Application, so I can´t change the mount options.

 

I changed the case where I put the drive to connect it externally to my windows PC, the old one was not working properly, 

with this I managed to run R-Linux and when trying to access the data volume, it starts searching for files, and it´s finding a lot of them, but it stops when it reaches a little bit more than 200,000 files, so now i´m running a scan with the R-Linux, to see what I can get.

 

With all the options I have tried, I have the same problem, I can´t see anything in the public data folder (Paragon ext2 did mount the drives, but same problem).

 

I will see once it finishes the scan with the r-linux maybe I  will have more luck.

 

Any other advice you can give me?

I noticed that R-linux for Windows found files, but also reported some bad sectors, so based on other posts I determined to use Linux or bust. I almost went to Best Buy to buy something cheap to put Ubuntu or Linux Mint (LM) on, but a friend had a spare we could use. 

 

Some will say this is inethical advice, but if you can buy a laptop somewhere that comes with a "factory restore" disk, just install LM on it, install the tools, get your data, then factory wipe the new laptop and take it back for a refund saying, "I can't stand this touchpad." Some balk at this abuse of retail, but.... 

 

If your R-Linux scan shows the partition is without errors, you don't really need to do data recovery as if there are "lost files." It's just that Seagate uses a fudged up flavor of LVG/LVD for this huge partition, and it needs fuseext2 tools in Linux to mount properly. Once it's mounted, it looks like any other drive. I copied about half a gigabyte of data off the HDD in an hour or so, everything was intact and in their proper folders. 

 

Trust me, once we mounted in Linux with fuseext2 it was trivially easy to retrieve the files onto another drive. TRIVIALLY EASY.

Well I do have an spare laptop, so I installed ubuntu, but the same thing happened than when I  used in my regular Windows Laptop with USB unetbooting ubuntu. when trying to show all the partitions, it showed Can´t have a partition outside the disk.

 

Installed r-linux on ubuntu , and same thing, can´t get past the 88 gb and it halts the scan.

and when I display the files, same thing, only get the ones in a private folder, but not the ones in the public, where i stored everything.

 

any other solution? is there something else i need to install on ubuntu to properly mount LVM partition?

The fact that R-Linux is halting the scan indicates a problem. Make sure you're mounting the drive read-only. The scan can take hours. Let it run overnight.

 

This "can't have partition outside the disk" error is odd, never seen it myself (and I'm an RHCSA with some Fedora experience).  Have you tried lvscan or lvdisplay? Have you installed FuseExt2 tools? If not, do so. Now. I couldn't mount the lv partition without them.

 

It could be an Ubuntu issue. I succeeded with Linux Mint. Maybe you should try it....

Yes since the beginning of the tests I installed FuseExt2, but no luck , lvscan and lvdisplay say command not found, it´s weird, because i can see the LVM partition on R-Linux, but can´t seem to mount or see the partition on the terminal, I used the commands to mount you described, so I suppose i´m  mounting as read only.

 

I will try Linux Mint, and let you know, thanks

That's odd. You could install LVM (a Red Hat Enterprise Linux tool), or if you want to have more control, learn the terminal commands.

Looks like Ubuntu supports lvdisplay. LM should, you might have install the full package of lv support (some distros don't let you configure logical volumes on installation.

Well, I´m about to give up, I don´t know if I´m doing something wrong, I installed Linux Mint, using LVM as the partition system, installed fuseext2 tools with the command

sudo dpkg -i ~/Downloads/fuseext2_0.4-1.1_i386.deb

, but the same error apeared "Can´t have a partition outside the disk"  when I run the command sudo parted -l, so It never shows the label for the data partition, which in R-Linux shows vg1-lv1, but if I try to run lvscan or lvdisplay I only see the complete hard drive, not the lvm partition, and If I try to mount, using fuseext with the command

sudo fuseext2 -o ro /dev/mapper/vg1-lv1 /mnt/seagate

, it can´t find the location /dev/mapper/vg1-lv1

 

When I  try to scan using R-Linux, it stops at around 85-89 Gb

 

Finally, I downloaded testdisk, I tried to do a scan also, but it stopped at 12% , this same solution has an application to recover files called PhotoRec, which I´m running now, and the weirdest, it´s recovering lots of my files, but with generic names, no folder structrue, obviously.

 

So this tells me my info is there, what else can I possibly do to recover the files with their name and structure?

The device path to vg1-lv1 will not necessarily be the same on your system as on another person's (i.e. /dev/mapper/blahblahblah). That's why you run commands to determine how the disk has been detected. R-Linux should show the dev path IIRC. 

 

I'm at a loss about the other error messages you're getting. All the indications you list certainly suggest a problem with the disk and/or partition. When you say "it stops at around 85-99 gb" or "it stopped at 12%," I believe you should be getting an error message or indication. Scans that halt at 12% are doing so for a reason. Read all that the software is telling you; we can't look over your shoulder. :} 

 

Your next step may be to hire professional data recovery specialists. Sorry.

SOLVED AT LAST

 

Well after many attempts withy Linux Mint, and many things I treid, the solution was very simple, my SATA to USB didn´t seem to support the big disk, so I used an old Desktop computer (around 5 years old, but with SATA suport), open, attach the disk and voila, the disk was fully recognized, and I used  Paragon ExtFS for Windows to recover the files I needed,

 

thank you so much for your help, and hope everyone can recover their data.

My question is a simple one.  Why make this more difficult than it already is.  I didn't fool with Linux or make a bootable USB and as you will read, I was very successful on my first try (after reading blogs such as this and many more).  Save some time and just follow these instructions.  I used this method and couldn't believe how simple the whole process was. I was able to recover most of my files (some got destroyed, I'm sure with me trying to bang the hard drive to get it spinning up as was suggested in a video. Don't do that!! By the way, it was the Seagate Central box (I'm sure) that died and hung the hard drive. So here's the process I followed using Windows 10:

1. Remove HD from unit - This will void the warranty!

2. If your HD head is stuck like mine was, watch this video:  You will need a Torx wrench. I had to go to the Ace's Hardware to buy the wrench since I didn't have a small enough one. It wasn't a #6 like he said in the video, so I took the HD with me to get the correct one.  The head was stuck on the platter.  Once reseated at it's stop, the HD worked like a charm.

3. I connected it as a 3rd drive internally in my desktop but even though the BIOS recognized it, Windows 10 would not. After reading many blogs, I found one that I thought was stupid at first but was already grasping at straws so I gave it a try.

 

  • In Windows click on the search window next to the Start button (lower left corner) and type troubleshoot.
  • In the Troubleshooting window, click on "View All" on the left side.
  • Run the "Hardware & Devices" using the defaults.
  • Restart your computer.

4. Presto! Using Windows Explorer, I could see lots of new drive letters. But none of them could be read.

5. Using Windows, download and install Paragon ExtFS. (I did a restart here)  (You will have 10 days to use the program in free trial mode)

6. Using Windows, I ran ExtFS and it found the Central drive with no input from me.

7. Look for the largest drive and double click on it. This most likely is your data drive.  ExtFS mounts it so it can be read using Windows Explorer.  It named mine drive "N".

8. It's that simple. Still using Windows, I opened 2 Windows Explorer windows side by side and began copy/paste & drag/drop, to my new My Cloud Pro 2100 server. The folders were all on the data drive just like how I initially created them.

I've recovered over 2Tb of data I thought was lost forever. Good Luck!  I hope you have the success that I had.
