maria123,  :welcome: to our Linux Community of Bleeping Computer Forums! :)

We're happy to have you among us, and very much look forward to your participation within our Community & throughout the Forum! :thumbup2:

Thanks for your valuable contributions as an early member to our ranks, happen to have Dropbox myself, found in a Tutorial elsewhere maybe a couple of weeks or less ago, though I'm sure that our members are happy to now know that we have choices. And yes, everything looks to be fine, no one here is perfect, and we don't expect the same from anyone, unlike some 'dedicated' Linux forums you may run into, if not already. We work different, as a team, for all of our members, if you have questions, just ask. :)

Please always keep this in mind, there's no such thing as a 'dumb' question here, other than the one not asked when in need. Meaning we're here for you, if we don't know the answer to an issue, will look outside for one when needed, if one's available. Our track record isn't perfect, yet it's not because we don't strive to be. While for many issues one will run across, where will be an answer, once in a blue moon there's not one, or may be discovered later by a newer member, I've had questions of my own answered in this manner, the last a minor one, yet I was still happy to find the cure after I had long given up. :thumbup2:

maria123, enjoy the benefits of being a member of Bleeping Computer! :)

I would hazard a guess that maria123 was a spammer so her post was removed ... http://www.stopforumspam.com/search

Oh well, that's how it goes.

We get these types here and there, quite more often than we'd like to think, though the Forum's Spam filters stops most, still a few slips through the cracks. Especially if they're posting from an alternate ISP with a different username, email address, and other credentials.

Usually they'll post something out of line with the Forum's values, and that's the end. First impressions aren't always the full story. I respect & stand by the decision of the superior(s) who made it. :thumbup2:

Nothing we can do except carry on. :)

We get a number of these types on the Puppy Forums. The worst one we had was around 8 or 9 months ago; it was obviously an automated bot of some kind, but it managed to completely swamp every single sub-forum within 45 mins. It was auto-posting every 90 seconds or so, simultaneously in every forum. Flash (our one and only moderater (!)), had a devil of a job getting on top of it.....but he has a hotline to John Murga, the individual who privately hosts the Puppy Forum. Luckily, they sorted it out within around 20 mins.

(You might find this rather amusing reading.....)

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=103380

The real problem, unfortunately, is that John's using rather elderly phpBB forum software which is around 8-9 yrs old; it's highly modified, and very heavily patched.....and John really doesn't want to go through the aggravation of setting it all up again from scratch (the more so, given that after all these years, he's forgotten what some of those modifications are...)

The spam filters catch 98% or so; those that do slip through are almost always selling fake identity documents.....  :scratchhead:  I think, in all honesty, every on-line forum gets spells of this from time to time. And, as Cat says, all you can do is 'carry on regardless'..!

Sorry, Nick; going 'off-topic' again.....

Mike.

Hi Just found this site and I think its excllent.  Just spent a couple of hours on here and learned so much

Anyway I tried to download     Linux All-in-One For Dummies, 5th Edition (2014)  but permission denied error 403

Is there anywhere else I can get a free pdf d/l please

Also some links to d/l linux apps broke

Thanks again for a brilliant site.  Much better than many of the ubuntu forums. They are overloaded. too many people asking questions and not enough answering bless them.

Really hoping to get a reply to my windows/ubuntu hdd problems.  cheers

I just downloaded it from this link.

Go down to where it says Download Link:

Note that some of the eBooks or Guides may have different extensions & requires added software to view, read more here.

https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1025

Applies to Linux Mint, yet also to much any Ubuntu based distro. For example, from the above site where vacuum-tube posted, I downloaded a security manual with the .chm extension. I found one in the Software Manager to view the guide. While most will be in PDF, a few resources will only be shipped in other formats. :)

vacuum-tube, thanks for your contribution! :)

Hello guys! I found this site that claims to offer "free" Ubuntu E-Books. However, when I try to download them, I am redirected to a page that wants me to fill out all of my personal information. I do not want any spies and/or trackers to know anything about me. If the E-books were really free, why would they want your personal information? The Linux Command line, and other E-books, just click the download link and go, but unfortunately for these it's not that simple. Is there any way to work around this site? Maybe to get the direct download link or HTML shortcut?

Hi BlueGalaxy, I remember your Topic from 3 weeks ago on the HP Omnibook.

Dealing with the first link only:

Did you want the whole 11 books, or if not, which one/s? Why I ask is that Gerard Beekman's book Linux From Scratch, listed at Number 9, is easily available elsewhere. If you go to http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ you will find a list of 8 of his Projects. Clicking (or right-clicking and opening a new tab) on LFS will take you to a page where you can click Download, follow the links and you can get a PDF of his latest edition released last month to open for you, and then download from there. No privacy issues.

Similarly, with number 8 Introduction to Linux a Hands-On Guide: I simply ran a Google search on the title and found a couple of sites where you similarly could open and download a PDF (I think Edition 3 was the latest I saw) - they varied from 65 pages to 223 pages (might depend on different editions) and one looked like ebook-reader format.

As for the tradepub link, I have no idea what you are looking for, so you might need to adopt the same approach.

The maintainer of this excellent Topic is cat1092, and Cat may have other ideas for you (as may others).

Hope this is of some assistance, and enjoy your Linux.

I found this site that claims to offer "free" Ubuntu E-Books. However, when I try to download them, I am redirected to a page that wants me to fill out all of my personal information

BlueGalaxy, use a disposable email address, if you don't have one, Yahoo, AOL & Mail.com has these for free, just sign in once every 90 days to stay active. Good to use for registering Free software also, so that your 'important' email doesn't get flooded. Also, use a nickname, rather than your real first name. :P

As to your address/phone number, use one where you lived 20 years back, the same with a phone number, use any old number you once had, that's exactly what I did, and get emails from TradePub most every day. Some, you may not want, other you may, it's your choice. And I understand why you don't want to give out a ton of personal data, which is why I stated to list a very old place of residence & old phone number (at least 4 back if possible), and keep a disposable email address using the same credentials, if asked. Being creative is key. :)

Had I known of some of these eBooks when I was 30 years old, would be a millionaire by now. There's things in there that universities don't teach, and that's real life experience (this applies to most degrees other than medical, when one begins working with corpses). :P

These eBooks can fill in the gaps where oner is educated, yet has no real world experience, or used for many other hobbies/trades other than computing. This Topic has been seen well over 40,000 times, and for good reason, the wealth of knowledge out there at zero cost to the reader. :)

All of my eBooks are saved on two spare externals & also to Google Drive, as well as OneDrive, and on the /home partition of my computer. Kind of how I backup everything, rather than keeping all on one external, spread these out across eight instead, four of which are 1TiB HDD's. I really need a 2TiB backup drive, am always feeling cramped for space,,,,,,,even with over 7TiB at my disposal (half from broken computers). It's amazing at how one can accumulate so much data over the years, but need to stop here to keep my Topic from being locked down.

Be creative, and you'll have no issues with TradePub. :)
