List of Antivirus Uninstallers and Removal Tools

I have a laptop that is about 15 month old, I never really used it very much therefore did not install any antivirus software or virus protection software, I started using the laptop about a week ago for research and think that I should do something to protect the laptop, considering that I might be experiencing some trouble (slow, sometimes does not respond) can you offer some antivirus software for me to install. I am not very techy at all, so sorry if this sounds pathetic.

I would like to remove McAfee and replace it with AVG.

Do I just run the uninstaller available from the list in the first post?

Or do I uninstall McAfee using Add/Remove Programs and THEN run the extra uninstaller?

First, go to the McAfee Security Center (via the icon in your system tray) to DISABLE each of the individual McAfee components that you plan on removing.

Next, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove components of McAfee Security Center.

1. Download the removal tool from:

2. Click Save and save the file to any folder on your computer.
3. Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
4. Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
5. Double-click MCPR.EXE to run the removal tool.

Note: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.EXE and select Run as Administrator.

6. Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.

Thank you for this useful website, but I have a question here: Is it true that the antivirus keeps all the viruses that was captured and when uninstalling it , it will release them?

What do you mean by keep that was captured? What antivirus applications do is give you certain options such as delete, clean, and quarantine. They "keep" the files in a quarantine folder, which are usually encrypted or modified so that they will not be executed or pose as a threat to any user, and if ever the user schedules automatic deletion of these files or manually delete them using his/her antivirus application, that's the time the viruses will be deleted.

I'm a tad brain dead in recent days as CleanUp Antivirus invaded my computer. I used this site's suggested method to fix and finished at the end by deleting my hosts file - but I need to download a new one and I can't access it with the link provided.

Any ideas?

you can just create a simple text file and rename it to host without the .txt file name and just put there the following line:

127.0.0.1 localhost


that's the usual thing that needs to be in any host file.

In the instructions to remove malware programs, it is suggested to run rkill, which will end the process of any malware program. Then run MBAM. When this is run, in safe mode, as either rkill, or explorer (a second suggestion), the process terminated immediately is 'rkill' or 'exploere'. I assume by the malware process. Further note, the rkill process stops, then Windows 'System Restore' process starts, asking if you want to bring the system back to an earlier date. Any help would be appreciated, still infected. Windows xp sp3

Sunbelt Personal Firewall

Use the cleaner if normal uninstallation didn't work or really want to remove all traces.
I've used it several times, so I could try other firewalls, and it always worked.

What's best for removing Antivirus programs? The removal tool from the software's publisher, or Revo, or something else?

I've been happy with ZSoft Uninstaller, but (1) I don't know anything about going inside a computer to check how thoroughly a program's been removed, so this is a subjective opinion, based mostly on reviews and the simple fact that ZSsoft shows you things that Windows' own 'Add/Remove Programs' doesn't, and (2) I've never needed to uninstall an antivrus program and replace it with an entirely different one.

I have a brand new computer and I want to take every possible precaution to avoid any kind of junk clogging it up. (Thorough program removal - especially for anti-virus, in case I try one and don't like it - is just one part of that.)
