IIRC Bill P sold Win Patrol **ages** ago....

I fondly remember the Scotty dog, but TBH I haven't used WP in eons.

But I'm glad to know it still "works".

Alerts to changes in programs that run at startup and if another program has removed a startup program is the main reason I have kept portable Scotty around all these years.

Hi Friends,

I just wanted to add some hopefully relevant info to this long discussion.

Sadly, I only just now found about about the demise of such an excellent and useful program. I certainly will miss it!

I found out about it, because I was getting alerts from ESET, that it was blocking WinPatrol from contacting its website.  And when I tried to directly access it from my browser, that was blocked too. Fyi, I had the free (non-PLUS) version.

I don't have the right kind of skills to track down the reason why. But my best guess would be that some nefarious person or group has taken over the address. Maybe someone with the right kind of skills can track it down? Not that I'm asking anyone to do so. I just wanted to share the info.

I suppose I could bypass the block, and look at the site. But since it sounds like WinPatrol is no longer there....at least not the real WinPatrol, I guess I won't try it.

It's too bad that no one in the privacy/security community can pick it up, update, and re-package it. Since the last comments in this thread on the subject (over a year ago), is there any news about a replacement product?

All best,

brynn

@bbrynnn just turn off in the PLUS area connect or updates or ....   As well block it from going out onto the net in your firewall.   It can be still be some what useful if wanting to run outdated software.

As to the site it is for sale.   Reading all the comments would have told you what happened.  Which is always suggested before posting.

I've always seen that experts say that an outdated program is best off uninstalled because exploits may be discovered but never fixed since it's been abandoned. Does this not apply in this case given that the program is several years abandoned?

Oh, I did read the whole entire thread. Maybe I missed a comment somewhere, but I only read that the site was offline, not that someone else was owning or using it. Or that the site was unsafe and apparently blacklisted.

Yes, I have uninstalled it now. I only wish I had found out sooner that the program had been abandoned.

All best.
