LOL :=}  When making a web page you have to give it a Charset so that in is interpreted by the browser so it can read it.

Such as this in the coding side of a web page : <meta charset="utf-8"> or inthis case BC is : <meta charset="windows-1252">

You can see this if click a web page and then click View Page Source the above is always in the header.

You can also see it if click in the Address Bar page security icon (firefox) and click on Site Information

It is known that it is here again.    (Character Encoding)   windows-1252 vs utf8

It has to do with Encoding the website as well Windows uses UTF-16 / windows-1252 or there is more options when creating the page or coding the page for display.
Charset most sites if not new were UTF-8

As well there is s fix which is turn your Charset to UTF-8 but that would be degrading the install and is not as easy as it once was.

This has happened on my phone and if it was a charset issue it would affect many more. It hasn't happened recently

Yes. Correct.  It effects only certain setups.  I do not know the reasoning behind only certain users have the issue.

It was a reason though that when I made web pages I always gave it UTF-8

As well once gave up coding and just editing templates I would change what they had entered in the code to UTF-8 as there was always a degree of lesser issues

from people viewing a page.

So not a wiz on this anymore at all and could be completely wrong now.  It use to be the issue or fix the issue.

As well could get someone to change the character encoding in Windows 7/XP (no idea about 8) to UTF-8 and problem would be solved.  Just know what it used to be. :=}

Edit : Win10 up is UTF-16 encoding.

It maybe has to do with Linux.    I was always making pages and checking them for Windows across XP & 7 not for Linux.

This I learned starting in Geocities and Notepad and a napkin.

The operating system doesn't matter for making web pages.

The "" text artifact issue is part of Mojibake ("character transformation"), and it can vary between web browsers.

Such as, for example, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and (possibly) other Chromium-based browsers.

Nonetheless, I still have NOT tested any other Chromium-based browsers, but maybe I should try doing that someday.

More specifically, I have noticed that this issue DOES appear in Google Chrome but does NOT in Mozilla Firefox.

As such, on my computer, I mostly use Mozilla Firefox to view and especially POST on the BC forums.

However, I sometimes also use Google Chrome to view the BC forums.

Good luck! :)

the charset

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html dir="ltr" lang="en-gb">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8" />

Above youll see two different charsets they are server side includes that for the html render your browser to display characters.

The top one is this site, the bottom one is the Linux Mint Forums that run on phpBB.

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

charset=iso-8859-1 was default till end of HTML 4.01 https://www.w3schools.com/charsets/ref_html_8859.asp

Yes.  But if it is a HTML page you made then can change the charset to anything you want.  I as said I prefer UTF-8 when making a page.

This is also recommended by W3C.org (who make the standards and rules)  https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_charset.asp (very good place to learn coding)

@Meg Will maybe find the above site interesting if trying to figure out any code you run across or even how to make a web page or just a understanding of how it all works and comes together to make what you read, see, hear, play

So if the page is using a Charset in the coding your operating system settings are ignored regardless of how you're operating system is configured. Hence why for me it appears on my mobile android across multiple browsers at random times and even on my Linux machines which uses utf8.

It effects Browsers differently.

I do not know the reason but in XP/7 when I had issues it tended to be some clipped code in the OS that was the issue.

As well as mentioned when I change the OS to UTF-8 and recommended to others and it fixed their issue as well.

As said have no idea why it fixed my others/issues.  Other than URL in Post # 38 gives glimpses of it as well as others fixing there issues.

Some hints at stuff here : https://www.google.com/search?q=mozilla+focus+android+charset+utf-8&client=firefox-b-d&sca_esv=2cdbf9d7674441ef&ei=CgcCZvnPJrPA0PEPo8GQsAU&ved=0ahUKEwj5_Mf_xpCFAxUzIDQIHaMgBFYQ4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=mozilla+focus+android+charset+utf-8&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiI21vemlsbGEgZm9jdXMgYW5kcm9pZCBjaGFyc2V0IHV0Zi04MgUQIRigAUjXQ1CLCljhPXABeAGQAQCYAaMBoAG4CKoBBDEzLjG4AQPIAQD4AQGYAg-gAuEIwgIKEAAYRxjWBBiwA8ICBhAAGBYYHsICBRAhGJ8FwgIEECEYFZgDAIgGAZAGCJIHBDE0LjGgB9s8&sclient=gws-wiz-serp

But was going to ask are you using Firefox or Firefox Focus for Android or both ?   Which was what I as sort looking for before added utf-8 and the URL went wild....

I have both on my Samsung, I have no favourite as I hardly ever use a browser on it.
