Just to add: I cannot comment on forum newcomer @pdario's suggestion about Windhawk's "exclusions", as I have no personal experience with this application.

It looks like a recent issue with the latest Office update: you should have Windhawk or any other code injecting app on your PC; if this is che case, you can add Office directory to Windhawk exclusions

I just started experiencing this issue today, and Windhawk was indeed the culprit. You can fix the problem by setting up an exception in Windhawk → Settings → Advanced settings → More advanced settings → Process exclusion list. Add "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\*" to the list.

Did this - doesn't change the problem.

Hello, I'm sorry for being late: I'll try to sum up all the replies here.

Faulting module name: AppVIsvSubsystems64.dll

is the main clue to the issue I mentioned, whenever you see this, look at possible code injectors you might have on your PC.

Online repair does not work because it does not rollback latest office update; you have to clean uninstall it, re-install and disable auto updates: you'll be ok.

@MoxieMomma I don't think many users have code injectors installed.

Well, it seems we may be going in circles.
It *does* seem to be the case that Windhawk may be contributing to or causing the issue.

If adding MS Office to its exclusions does not fix the problem, then common sense would suggest that uninstalling Windhawk would be the next troubleshooting step?

HOWEVER, as pointed out earlier, the "damage" to Windows may have already been done. So, you might need a Windows repair install via an in-place upgrade to restore the OS back to before Windhawk modified it.

I have no personal experience with Windhawk. So I don't understand the reluctance to uninstall it. Such 3rd-party Windows "tweaking" apps can be more trouble than they are worth.
And having to repeatedly reinstall MS Office doesn't seem like a viable longterm solution.

Just my tuppence and worth less

This worked for me

Clean uninstall (with MS SaRA) -> reinstall office -> block updates -> office works

Uninstalled Windhawk -> let office update -> office works

It could be office self updated without you noticing.

My troubles started when I left for launch break and found Outlook closed: it didn't start anymore along with all other office apps; I tried different things that DID damage my Windows none of the worked; then I found that during launch the office update run and caused troubles

If this was me, I would back up and reinstall windows and stop using Windhawk.

Well, on the bright side, at least the workaround entails only uninstalling Windhawk & reinstalling Office.

It could have been worse, entailing either DISM & SFC *or* a repair install of Windows.

I rest my case re: Windows "tweaking" programs. :-D

Thanks for closing the loop.

That would be the most drastic - but cleanest - solution.
