In your case, what was happening that your OS was in the midst downloading and installing updates in the background and had to finish installing what it could and clean up by removing any unfinished installations and complete other processes need to permit the OS to run without problems the next time you boot. And after boting if finishes downloading and installing the unfinished updates in the queue in the background.
Your five seconds sounds about right.

Thanks Thomas, that makes sense.

I'll keep a close eye on start-up and shutdown times going forward.

Honestly, in the 30 some years I've been using Linux, I've never bothered keeping a watch on startup and shutdown times, if it seems to take a much longer time, I look at the logs to see if why, but never found anything worth looking deep into.
Except for the first time after I set up a new or updated network and that was mainly because I wanted to make sure it was properly set up. And then, if I can, even on a good setup, I'll shut it down and restart to reassure myself.

My trainer taught me that just because the network worked the first time, when you can shut it down and restart it and it still works, you're good to go. It's a belt and suspenders type of thing.

On platter drives with 7200rpm spindle speed my shutdowns and boots were less than 2 minutes for both windows and linux on same hardware.

Same hardware on ssd was less than 40 seconds.

My nvmes less than 30 seconds for both.

I can see the advantages to using the Puppy system. There is just one thing that is pushing me away at the moment.
I'm not enamored with default the fonts in the user interface. Is it possible to change them to another one that I may like?

Aye, that's no problem. Though, as with many things in Puppy, due to its nature as a 'hobbyist' system much stuff is a bit more manual than you'd find in Windows.

Remember, ostensibly Windows is all about the user - hence GUIs for absolutely everything. But as we all know, these days Windows is more about mining the user for data than anything else! MyCrudSoft come first; the user comes a rather poor second in the deal, despite thinking it's all about them.....

I'm not especially enamoured of the default fonts in Puppy myself; I scoured the 'net for alternatives long ago, and have amassed quite a decent set of alternatives by now.

This is my default font, and has been for a few years:-

https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/exo-2

There are literally thousands of alternative fonts out there. Just make sure what you download are TTF files......once you've unzipped 'em, stick 'em in /usr/share/fonts. Then you can change your global font in Puppy.

Mike.

You can convert .otf type fonts into .ttf type fonts. The easiest tool is FontForge

To use
1. 0pen FontForge
2. Go to File > Open. Select the font file you want to convert.
3. Check the font preview to verify it loaded properly.
4. Go to File > Generate Fonts.
5. In the dialog box, set the Font format to OpenType (OTF)
6. Set the Filename and output location for the converted font.
7. Click Generate to convert and save the font.

This process can also convert TrueType fonts (TTF) into Open Type fonts (OTF) by selecting (TTF) in Step 5.
